Tonight South Carolina will look to continue its recent momentum after a promising 5-3 win over College of Charleston Wednesday night.
The Gamecocks (16-6, 4-2 SEC) return to conference play this weekend as they host a three-game series at Sarge Frye Field against Kentucky (21-2, 4-2 SEC).
It has been an up and down week for the baseball team who lost a road game to in-state rival Furman 4-2 on Tuesday, then beat a solid College of Charleston squad 5-2 the next evening.
So far in conference play this year, Ray Tanner's crew has swept Mississippi State and lost a difficult series 2-1 to Vanderbilt.
Junior Mike Cisco (4-0, 2.45 ERA) is scheduled to get the start tonight against the Wildcats who are confident after winning their last two games against Xavier and Auburn.
In Cisco's last outing for the Gamecocks he allowed only one run in more than seven innings of work in route to a 9-1 victory over Mississippi State.
Both teams in tonight's matchup are currently tied for second place in the eastern division of the SEC, and the winner will likely create some space between themselves and the rest of the conference opponents.
Currently the Gamecocks average a staggering 10 runs per game and have an astounding long-ball performance with home runs in 21 of 22 games so far this year. South Carolina's team batting average is an impressive .315.
Junior third baseman James Darnell has been a catalyst for South Carolina's offense as he hopes to extend his impressive 10-game hitting streak this weekend.
Other talents that will likely lead the offense include junior shortstop Reese Havens and junior first baseman Justin Smoak. Combined the two players have over 50 RBIs and have 12 home runs already this season.
With a solid pitching performance the Gamecocks should be able to overpower Kentucky and send a message to the rest of the SEC that South Carolina is a team that even the best opposition should fear.
The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 7 p.m.
