Veteran announcer Fulton released by athletics office

Bob Fulton, longtime play-by-play commentator for Gamecock sports, has been released from USC's athletics department.

Fulton, who had been on as a consultant, said he was told by athletics department officials that his services would no longer be needed because of the department having to "cut expenses."

After serving as "The Voice of the Gamecocks" for 43 years, Fulton was asked to remain on staff as a consultant to the university upon his retirement in 1995 by then-Athletics Director Mike McGee. His work included traveling to Gamecock sports functions and assisting with USC sports broadcasting. More recently, Fulton worked with new play-by-play commentator Todd Ellis as he prepared to take over play calling duties for USC football.

Fulton received numerous honors throughout his career, including being named South Carolina Sportscaster of the Year eight times. He is also a member of the USC and South Carolina Athletic halls of fame, the first non-athlete or coach to go into each.

Repeated calls to the athletics department office Thursday were unreturned.
