"Pure beef"
Who knows what the quotes imply, but viewing the menu at Sandy's could make anyone wonder.
Thorough examination of the menu reveals the quotation marks emphasize Sandy's commitment to the quality of its hot dogs: "They are made especially for Sandy's … We believe our hot dogs are bigger, tastier and healthier than any hot dogs, anywhere."
The jury is still out on bigger and healthier, but tastier is a fair description.
The dogs come in two sizes, eighth and quarter pound, and come standard with chili, mustard and onions (ketchup on request). Those seeking a little more on their hot dog can add slaw, cheese, sauerkraut or relish for an extra 30 cents each.
The dog was tender and tasted exactly like a hot dog should. The chili was served in a healthy portion on top of the dog and added a substantial flavor to a basic meal without being overly spicy.
At $4.19 for an eighth pound dog, bag of chips and a drink, Sandy's offers students excellent value.
While Sandy's food score was based primarily on its signature hot dogs, the other items were somewhat lacking. The sweet tea was still warm and the vanilla milkshake seemed to be 90 percent milk.
Sandy's offered an excellent selection of ice cream, but the packaging was just plain pointless.
A single scoop of ice cream with a topping came in a two-part container. The top container was filled with some topping, the bottom with the ice cream, and then they were snapped together. Removing the top part to access the ice cream let loose a fury of falling toppings.
Aside from the mess, however, it was tasty and there was a lot of it for a single scoop.
Gamecock fans won't feel out of place letting loose toppings or eating with their hands in Sandy's relaxed atmosphere, though. Posters displaying the Head Ball Coach, Sidney Rice, Tre Kelly and other sports stars are posted near the cash register. Old newspapers covering football games are on display throughout the seating area.
The main drawback at Sandy's was the cleanliness, or slight lack thereof. One table that at first appeared clean had dried ketchup on it. Also, the area near the silverware was unpleasantly sticky.
The service was pleasant and everything you could expect. After ordering, the food was prepared quickly and served politely. The location also offers a drive thru for customers in a hurry (just don't open that ice cream in the car).
Over all, Sandy's is a sure bet for students looking for a place within easy walking distance of campus with good hot dogs at a low price.
