Every corner of the globe has its own monster legend. Each one involves a distinct monster or creature that has been seen by many people but somehow cannot be confirmed for whatever reason. Canada has Bigfoot. Scotland has the Loch Ness monster. Mexico has the Chupacabra. Now recent monster sightings are coming out of Argentina, but the monster doesn't seem to be as much of a menace as the other ones.
This week's YouTube video shows that some sort of lawn gnome is terrorizing the inhabitants of the town of Salta somewhere in Argentina. Of course, like all authentic monster footage, the quality of this video is incredibly poor. The whole ordeal is recorded on a grainy cell phone camera in the dead of night on a poorly lit street. The story goes that a small group of teenagers were hanging around the side of the street that night discussing their fishing trip, when something threw a rock and made noises that got their attention. They thought it might have been some kind of small animal, but when the figure emerged into the light it appeared to be a little man. It was even wearing an oversized, cone-shaped hat. It just danced for a few moments in the street, sliding from side to side. It doesn't look very threatening, but the kids were absolutely terrified of it.
"This is no joke," said Jose Alvarez, who shot the footage with his phone. "We are still afraid to go out - just like everyone is in the neighborhood now ..."
In the video, it looks like it could be a dwarf in a costume. However, there was another video that was released online some time later in 2007, which is the same video but with significant differences. In the second video, someone has a flashlight, and the creature's arms are much longer. It looks like a small ape. There are certainly enough changes to suggest that the whole affair is nothing but a hoax.
