From Bill Clinton to John Kerry to the mainstream media -- and every "liberal" individual and organization in between -- there is an obvious consensus that abortions are completely safe and have no short-term or long-term side effects that anybody should be worried about. Planned Parenthood's position, for instance, is that "abortion poses no demonstrated health risks," and it maintains that any evidence to the contrary is "tainted by a political agenda."

Still stuck in the '60s, the left wants women to believe that the recreational approach to sex is a valid and recommendable lifestyle, so it's crucial that they convince them that the natural byproduct of sex -- pregnancy -- is something that can be eliminated easily and without any consequences.

Unfortunately for the women who believe what the left is telling them, everything these people are saying about the safety of abortion is a lie.

The British Journal of Ob&Gyn found, in its study of post-abortion women, that 44 percent complained of nervous disorders, 36 percent had problems sleeping and 11 percent had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their doctor.

A study performed by the Canadian government on the subject found that a full 25 percent had been to see a psychiatrist within five years of having an abortion, compared to just 3 percent of the control group.

The nonpartisan Westside (Los Angeles) Pregnancy Resource Center points out that a major study of post-abortion women found that, at the very least, 19 percent suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. A few of the symptoms include "recurrent and intrusive thoughts about the abortion or aborted child, nightmares about the abortion or child" and "anniversary reactions of intense grief or depression" on the due date of the aborted child or on the anniversary of the abortion.

The psychological toll abortion can take on women can be unbearable. Indeed, 60 percent of the women thus affected by abortion report thinking suicidal thoughts, and 28 percent of them do ultimately attempt suicide.

And those are just some of the mental health risks of abortion. On the physical health side, there is the fact that post-abortion women are more likely to deliver handicapped newborns in later pregnancies. Again, according to the West Side Pregnancy Resource Center, the cervical and uterine damage often caused by abortion can lead to "premature delivery ... and abnormal development of the placenta in later pregnancies." These complications are the most common causes of handicaps among newborns.

There is also the much-studied, yet underreported, link between abortion and breast cancer, the so-called "ABC link." As WorldNetDaily reported in 2001, 27 of 35 studies since 1957 have positively established the ABC link. Dr. Joel Brind, president of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute, explains that, upon conceiving, a woman's estrogen level soars to a level hundreds of times higher than normal. This high level of estrogen results in the growth of "undifferentiated" cells in the pregnant woman's breasts, a consequence of her body preparing itself for the production of milk. These undifferentiated cells are vulnerable to carcinogens, which can lead to the growth of cancerous tumors later in life.

However, for a woman to be capable of producing milk, it's necessary for these cells to go through a final process in the last weeks of a full-term pregnancy that terminally differentiates them. Differentiated cells are not vulnerable to carcinogens. But if a pregnancy is terminated before this process occurs, then the woman is left with an abnormal amount of the cancer-prone undifferentiated cells. The resulting increase in the woman's risk of developing breast cancer can be from 30 to 100 percent.

So, despite what disingenuous proponents of abortion would like women to think, evidence shows that there are significant physical and mental health risks associated with having an abortion. Far from being safe, abortion is, in fact, an extremely risky procedure that can not only cause substantial harm to the patient and any future pregnancies, but can also lead to agonizing psychological trauma as well. The fact is that the pro-abortion left does not have women's best interests in mind. Until Planned Parenthood and its supporters decide to start telling the truth, thousands of women will continue to be the ignored and forgotten victims of legally induced abortion.
