Clemson University students have reached a new low, even lower than the cow patties that surround their school.
White students mockingly celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday at a "gansta" bash in which partygoers guzzled down 40s and strutted around in costumes that included faux gold teeth grills, the Seneca Daily Journal reported. At least one clever student wore blackface.
Clemson made national news after some genius posted photos from the party on Facebook.com. Once again, Clemson students have demonstrated an incredible talent for poor taste.
Racist parties such as this aren't going on only in Clemson's cow pastures. Students at schools in Connecticut and Texas have thrown similar events.
Although these parties are happening off campus and without any official organizations' support, this kind of behavior looks terrible for these institutions, and we're thankful it didn't happen here.
Toga-, movie-, and '80s-themed parties are popular and fun enough to not resort to something that can offend an entire race of people.
One Clemson student told CNN they were just having "fun." But there is no justification for emulating a derogatory stereotype of any race for entertainment.
South Carolina constantly faces the nation's watchful eye for the Southern racist redneck. These students were perpetuating that Southern "idea." Next time a movie character has these traits, blame Clemson.
