I was never a fan of those purses that had your first initial on them. I never really understood what was so cool about having a big A or K or L slathered across some cheap fabric. It just wasn't my style.
When I came to Carolina, I noticed a lot of girls had things mono-grammed. Not just their first initial, but all of them, normally with their last initial larger and placed in the middle. The most popular item was a purse or book bag.
Personally, I think it can be very cute and helps if a lot of people have similar bags. But monogramming has hit a new tacky extreme.
I've seen monogramming on purses, shirts, flip flops, bathing suits, flasks, notepads, pens, picture frames, and even a hair clip. But none of these top what I just recently saw: monogram stickers for your car. Eww.
First of all, they are ostentatious. They are not discrete, delicate, or diminutive letters. They are huge, flowery, and smack in the center of the rear window. They are about as classy as having neon runner lights under your car and about as cool as an STD.
When you drive behind someone with one on his or her car all you can do is stare at the letters and think "do they really have that on their car?"
Secondly, the monogram sticker is another item in a myriad of new trends to aid the stalkers of America. It declares that you own that car. What are the chances that someone else on campus with the exact same initials owns the exact same car? If someone wanted to do you or your car damage, you are practically screaming "THIS CAR IS MINE." Have we learned nothing from "Law and Order: SVU?"
And finally, if you are going to have the sticker on your car, there should not be more than one other small sticker on it as well. The monogramming is so huge that anything more than one other sticker makes the back of your car look like a second-grade paper mâché project gone horribly wrong.
You do not need to declare your name, state flag, hometown, political affiliation, university name and favorite outdoor organization on your car.
Perhaps you should have an actual conversation with someone rather than having a mini Facebook on your back window.
I like monogramming. I think it is cute and adds some flavor to otherwise regular items. But girls, there is no reason for these gaudy stickers to be on your cars.
Especially when the letters will probably change before your car does.
