LEXINGTON - A 42-year-old Lexington man has been charged with murder after police say he shot another man in a dispute over a bet in the annual Carolina-Clemson football game.
James Walter Quick has been charged in the shooting death of Richard Allen Johnson, 43, of Lexington. Johnson died from a single shot to the chest from a high-powered rifle, Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman said after a preliminary autopsy Sunday.
Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said the two men were good friends and had bet $20 on the outcome of the football game - Quick bet on game-winner South Carolina, while Johnson bet on Clemson.
The two men drank beer all afternoon and watched the game at Johnson's home, Metts said. They began arguing about the bet after the game.
Metts said Quick went to his car, got the rifle he normally uses for hunting and fired one shot, hitting Johnson in the chest.
Deputies who responded to the call about the shooting said they found Quick standing with his arms folded across his chest and leaning against his car parked in Johnson's front yard. He was arrested without incident.
