The first night of rush week, as hundreds of girls got ready to begin their orientation to become a full-fledged member of a sorority, they brought with them school supplies for a charity fund to benefit students at South Kilbourne Elementary School.
From Alpha Chi Omega to Zeta Tau Alpha, all of the girls brought an assortment of school supplies, ranging from crayons to back packs, which were donated to the school that evening.
"It showed the girls right off the bat that philanthropy is a major part of Greek life and it gets everybody involved," said Monica Wagner, a fourth-year public relations student. Wagner said approximately 800 girls participated in the charity. By the end of the night there were many cars fully loaded with school supplies.
"Any child that expresses a need for supplies gets the supplies they need," said Roberta Moyd, a database specialist at South Kilbourne Elementary.
In order for this to happen, all a student has to do is inform a teacher, guidance counselor, administrator or anyone in an authoritative position about what items they need, and the school will do its best to fulfill that need as quickly as possible, Moyd said.
Having a supply of materials to distribute can be especially helpful for self-confidence students who do not have all of their school supplies. If it were not for this, the students may end up feeling left out, ashamed or embarrassed, Moyd said.
"It is great when the kids all get their supplies and go crazy over them," said Ricardo Hamdan, a fourth-year international business, marketing student and public relations chair for the fraternity council.
No child at South Kilbourne Elementary has gone without essential materials with the aid of the donations made by the sororities, and South Kilbourne intends to keep it that way, Moyd said.
Hamdan said the donation of the school supplies is just one example of the charity work that the sororities perform.
"Most people think negatively about the sorority rush, and the USC community deserves to know about the charity work that they are doing" Hamdan said.
