With a student, Robert Gonzales, at the heart of the paper's founding, on January 30, 1908 the first issue of The Gamecock was published. In the first semester of production only three issues were produced, but in the following term the paper began weekly production.

In January 2008, The Gamecock will mark its 100th year of publication. Throughout the paper's history The Gamecock has played a major role in influencing early campus policies, serving as a voice for students and helping to further enhance campus life.

In the fall of 2006, the paper celebrated another milestone as it began daily publication, changing the official name to The Daily Gamecock.

On the weekend of February 22 - 24, The Daily Gamecock invites all alumni and friends to celebrate the paper's historic past.
