Authorities release video of traffic stop

Video released Tuesday of Jadeveon Clowney’s traffic stop shows that a state trooper drove faster than 140 mph in his pursuit of the star South Carolina defensive end.

The trooper drove as fast as 142 mph in his pursuit of Clowney, according to the video, which was released under an open records request. The trooper drove above 100 mph for at least a minute and 15 seconds, the video shows.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the trooper’s speed Tuesday afternoon.

The trooper says in the video that Clowney drove past him at 110 mph about three miles before he was pulled over. The speed limit on that stretch of Interstate 77, about 25 miles north of Columbia, is 70 mph.

Clowney was given a ticket for $355, which he can contest in court Jan. 9, according to a copy released by the Highway Patrol. He is not required to attend the hearing.

An athletics spokesman did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

Clowney, a junior, is expected to join the NFL draft after this season. His last game for the Gamecocks is the Jan. 1 Capitol One Bowl against Wisconsin.
