Celebration recognizes 400 years of Shakespeare

In honor of what would be William Shakespeare's 452nd birthday, the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections is hosting a family-friendly celebration this Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Ernest F. Hollings Library and the Thomas Cooper Library entrance.

At noon and 2 p.m., USC theatre will present "Juke Box Shakespeare" will be performing a montage of Shakespeare's most memorable moments, performed on the green outside Thomas Cooper library. The South Carolina Shakespeare Company will demonstrate fighting techniques and traditional dances that were popular during the Elizabethan era. Later, they will perform "The Medicine Show," a collective of Shakespeare’s most compelling scenes, particularly those related to love, betrayal, health, healing and reconciliation. Children’s performances by the South Carolina Shakespeare Apprentice Troupe and the Kidz Company will follow.

Birthday cake in honor of Shakespeare will be served at 4 p.m. in front of the Thomas Cooper Library. Admission to all events is free.
