Benjamin elected to Conference of Mayors leadership

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin will take on a new role in the U.S. Conference of Mayors, The State reports. Currently in his second term as mayor, he will serve as second vice president of the organization. His term will begin in 2018. Benjamin, Columbia's first African-American mayor, has a history of leadership dating back to his time as a student at USC, where he served as student body president.

Motorcycle accident victim identified

The man killed in a motorcycle accident on a Columbia road has been identified, WLTX reports. Jesse Cravets, 35, died when his motorcycle collided with a car on June 22. The accident is still under investigation.

Mitch finds new team at JMU

Former Gamecock quarterback Conner Mitch has found a new home, WIS reports. He will transfer to James Madison University after graduating from USC over the summer. Mitch, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, expressed gratitude to the Carolina community as part of his announcement. Jalen Christian will also head to Virginia, announcing his own transfer to The College of William & Mary.
