South Carolina baseball commit dies at 16

South Carolina baseball recruit Brett Williams passed away suddenly, as first reported by The State's Lou Bezjak. Williams was 16-years old and had committed to the Gamecocks less than two weeks ago.

South Carolina baseball coach Chad Holbrook tweeted, "2day our community lost a great kid, a great son, a great teammate, and a "coaches dream". Our heart aches 4 Williams family. God Bless them!"

Williams was a sophomore at White Knoll High School in Lexington, South Carolina. As a freshman last season, he served as both a pitcher and as a position player, primarily handling first base when in the field.

An autopsy will be performed on Jan. 18, but Williams' sudden death is believed to be the result of complications associated with a currently undisclosed illness.

Northside Baptist Church in Lexington held a fellowship for those looking to mourn Williams' death.
