Gamecocks await decisions from highly-touted defensive recruits

With 10 commits already in the fold for the 2018 class, Will Muschamp and the South Carolina coaching staff are continuing to focus on bringing in top talent, and they could reap the benefits, as a couple of players' decisions will come in the upcoming week.

Four-star defensive end Stephon Wynn Jr. will make his commitment Saturday, choosing between Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. Clemson, his father's alma mater, was expected to be in the mix for the Anderson, South Carolina, native, but the Tigers were not in Wynn's final top three, which he announced on Twitter June 21.

After playing three seasons at T.L. Hanna, Wynn will spend his senior year at IMG Academy, one of the most top-notch facilities in the country, where he will play alongside stars like Xavier Thomas, the class's top prospect. Wynn will make his Saturday decision at the Anderson Rec Center at 1 p.m.

The Gamecocks are gunning for another defensive lineman who will announce later in the week in Jabari Ellis. The 6-foot-2, 280-pound defensive tackle is the No. 13 junior college player in the class, and he'll be making his announcement on Tuesday.

Ellis, who is expected to commit to South Carolina according to 247 Sports' Crystal Ball, will choose between South Carolina and N.C. State, becoming the third player to do so in the last two weeks. Quarterback Dakereon Joyner and defensive tackle Dantrell Barkley recently picked the Gamecocks over the Wolfpack to join the 2018 class.

Beyond this week, South Carolina has more high-profile targets who could join the class in July. Four-star cornerback Jaycee Horn will choose between South Carolina and Alabama July 15. The Gamecocks are the expected leader, and Horn was in Columbia for a June 14 camp, but Nick Saban's recruiting reputation should have the Gamecock faithful feeling uneasy leading up to Horn's final decision.

Additionally, Dorian Gerald, who tweeted that he's "so close to committing" on June 22, has South Carolina in his top five, behind only Tennessee. It's been six days without a commitment since Gerald's tweet, but a decision is expected in the coming days for the Florence, South Carolina, native. Gerald is the No. 10 junior college prospect in the country, and the second best at his defensive end position.
