A bill that would add a student vote to USC's Board of Trustees has been prefiled in the South Carolina House.

The bill, identical to a bill previously introduced in the state Senate, was prefiled by Lancaster Republican Brandon Newton. It has been sent to the Committee on Education and Public Works.

If passed USC's student body president would become a voting member of the university's Board of Trustees. Currently, the student body president is a non-voting member of the Board.

Student Body President Ross Lordo has actively campaigned for the law.

"Our goal right now is that we can push for it enough to get it out of committee to one of the chambers or get a hearing on it," he told The Daily Gamecock in August. "It equips students and a student body of over 50,000 in the entire system with the ability to have an opinion that is recorded for others to see."
