The Residence Hall Association Senate passed two unanimous bills last night, both granting funding to the Hands for Hunger poker tournament next week.
The first bill allocated $1,200 to purchase food and drinks from Publix for the tournament. The second bill allocated $1,174.42 to the Hands for Hunger committee to provide 175 T-shirts for people attending the tournament. The second bill will also cover the costs of table tents to promote the event.
RHA senators will be on Greene Street tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect cans for the food drive, as well as RHA President Amanda Pippin.
Pippin, who said that RHA's main goal is to get people to sign up and donate, is optimistic about the food drive results.
"The purpose of RHA is to support residents, but Hands for Hunger is a chance for residents to give back to the community," said Pippin, a third-year sports and entertainment management student.
Sen. Joe Saglimbeni, a fourth-year criminal justice student and head of the Hands for Hunger committee, also said that the event was important for the community.
"There are families that need help and this is a seemingly easy way to do it," Saglimbeni said.
Students will have an extra incentive to support Hands for Hunger through a poker tournament that will be held on Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. Students can buy their way into the tournament either by donating five cans or $5.
"The poker tournament is essentially another canned food drive," Saglimbeni said. "We give them the money and they can buy things with it that they deem necessary."
