Maya Pressley devotes her time to helping and motivating others on campus, in the community and at her church.
Pressley, a fourth-year public health student, is more than a student.
“Currently, I am involved in the Health Care Ministry at Word of God Church & Ministries, and I am a certified nurse’s assistant and phlebotomist,” Pressley said. “I am a private contractor and owner of Pressley Home Health. I believe I am fulfilling my God-given purpose. Helping others and healing is what I was born to do. The benefits of what I do are the joy of knowing I make a difference in the lives of others.”
Pressley is also the proud mother of two boys, Ukeba and Myles. Pressley said she really enjoys seeing dance and theatre performances on campus.
“My most memorable moment at Carolina was when I realized no matter what happened or how long it took to finish, I was going to see it through until the completion,” Pressley said.
Pressley said after seven years, three majors and a minor, perseverance is her key to success.
“After college, I would like to continue my education, grow several successful health-related businesses, and be used by God for his glory,” Pressley said. “I encourage others by telling them ‘don’t quit, no matter what it looks like. Sometimes a smile is all that’s needed or a listening ear to hear them out. However God leads me to encourage at that time, because with Him, all things are possible.”
Jacqueline Anderson, a social work graduate student said she met Pressley in a biology class that they took during the summer at Midlands Technical College.
“I was struggling in my biology class and Maya decided she would take me under her wing and help me out,” Anderson said. “Thank God she did. We’ve kept in touch on and off. We really depended on one another to talk with one another.”
Georgette Aiken, a recent USC graduate, said she and Pressley met in a Women, Bodies and Health class.
“I knew right off when I first met her that it was something very special about her,” Aiken said. “I knew we would be friends. She was so inspiring in the class.”
Aiken said Maya serves diligently in the Health Care Ministry to tend to the minor medical needs of the members of their church.
“You have to have the gift of health to do that, and Maya has that,” Aiken said.
