Mia Corsini, a second-year sports and entertainment student, is not only a USC Resident Mentor, but a trained and competitive ice skater.
Michelle Anderson, Corsini’s mother, said Corsini started skating at four years old and has been inspired ever since. Corsini has been to two national competitions and has won two gold medals in high school.
Anderson said her daughter is more of an artistic skater than a technical skater.
“She always excelled in ISI which is the International Skating Association,” Anderson said. “The ISI is where you can put together your own programs. She’s into choreography and dance. She’s more creative and technical in anything she does.”
The multi-talented Corsini spends her time mentoring girls in her residence hall, Patterson.
“That consumes the majority of my time,” Corsini said. “If they need something I have to be there for them, try to get them involved in campus life and community service, try to make them well-rounded students.”
Besides being an RM, she also works at the Strom Fitness & Wellness Center at the welcome desk, a job she thinks is good for her major.
“I’m trying to get as much involvement just so I can get any basic knowledge about the sports industry from the little things from working at a gym to working at actual sporting events,” Corsini said.
However, sports management wasn’t where Corsini started out. Corsini said she started in pre-pharmacy when she discovered it wasn’t for her.
“I went to school and I hated it,” Corsini said. “It’s not the lifestyle for me. I’m not a very cut-and-dry person. I’m all over the place. That is just not for me.”
Corsini said she has always loved all sports and is also involved in the Sports and Entertainment Club.
“I can’t be in as many clubs I’d like to be just for the sole purpose that I’m trying so hard to focus on activities to benefit the girls,” Corsini said.
Although Corsini is a hug fan of sports, she encourages others to focus on what sports are really about.
“If you’re just going in it because you really like football and you want to work for the NFL, it’s not going to get you anywhere,” Corsini said. “You have to be dedicated to it and that is why I volunteer at the games. You need connections and you can’t expect to be there right on top.”
Corsini also plays intramural volleyball and football.
“I really enjoy playing IM’s because I never got the chance to play different sports growing up,” Corsini said. “I was always in a skating rink so there was no soccer or softball experience for me. I’m an active person and with skating not a huge factor in my life right now IM’s keep me going.”
Do you know a standout Gamecock?
Here at The Daily Gamecock, we like to know about people.
Whether it’s the people who live on our hall, the people we see everyday in the Russell House or the people involved in campus organizations, people have stories to tell.
Since USC has more than 20,000 students, there are tons of great personalities and great people. It’s time to give them some credit.
Each Tuesday, we’re going to peer into the life of a Gamecock and what makes them tick in our “Gamecock of the Week” feature.
If you know of anyone who goes out of the way to make a difference, e-mail us at gamecocknews@gmail.com. We want to know.
