"The Avengers" is the type of movie with the potential to be either a complete triumph among special effects films or a complete failure because it is a special effects film. This spectacle became the central point when advertising the film, with the campaign boasting all the chaos from the effects-heavy action scenes. As we have learned from Michael Bay's fetish for soulless robot monotony, this is a recipe for disaster.

On Feb. 11, 2012, beloved recording artist and film star Whitney Houston joined the list of actors who passed before their final film; a list that dates back the golden years of Hollywood with actors like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe to more recent actors like Heath Ledger. Here is a look at actors whose final films were released posthumously:

Walt Disney Pictures has officially hit rock bottom. After their most recent box office bombs "Mars Needs Moms" (2011) and "John Carter" (2012), the studio has become desperate to recover from their financial losses caused by the production of these films. Disney recently decided to take some of the ideas that originally were tossed into the scum bucket and actually give them a chance. Most of the films currently in production already look very promising and it seems Disney has really put some careful consideration into each of these projects. Here are some of the films that audiences can look forward to:

In my first entry in this column, I discussed how rereleasing old movies in 3-D is a completely redundant concept that ruins the artistic integrity of our favorite animated Disney films. But this concept alone is only part of a bigger problem that currently exists within the movie industry: the reliance on movie trends.

Most of the hype that surrounds "Act of Valor" is that this film is supposedly more realistic than every other action and war movie of its kind because active duty Navy SEALS were cast instead of actors. The co-directors felt that casting actual Navy SEALs would be better for the film. I personally don't know that, based on past compelling war dramas such as "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) and "The Hurt Locker" (2008).

Japan's Studio Ghibli has a major reputation for delivering some of the greatest animated films in the world. Many of them have come from the extremely imaginative mind of acclaimed director and storyteller Hayao Miyazaki, such as the Academy Award–winning film "Spirited Away" (2001) and the Academy Award–nominated film "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004).

Valentine’s Day is that special time of year when guys purchase material objects like jewelry, buy expensive flowers and make fancy dinner reservations, all to please their better half. It’s also a great time of year to meet someone special, whether through speed dating or a random encounter, and plan out what is considered to be the most important step in any relationship: the first date. The ideal first date is commonly considered to be treating your date to a fancy dinner and movie. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as it sounds. You’re going to want to be careful when choosing which movie to see because it could affect the mood for the rest of the night. Here are some tips in picking the perfect flick:WARNING: If you’re just spending time with someone you met on Valentine’s Day eve (or, as Barney Stinson calls it, “Desperation Day”) so you won’t be lonely or you’re just looking for some action and not expecting a second date, then this article won’t help you.If there is one thing you don’t want your date to do, it’s fanaticize about some Hollywood hunk/bombshell instead of thinking about what a nice guy/girl you are. For all you guys, resist any temptation to take your date to a movie where the lead actor will mostly walk around bare-chested and showing of his abdominals. As a prime example, avoid anything with Channing Tatum, Ryan Reynolds and, most importantly, Ryan Gosling. For you ladies, avoid all things Megan Fox or any actress with Jessica in their name. If you want to take your date to a nice romantic flick, you’ll definitely want to avoid something that is too melodramatic. You know, movies like “Titanic.” Those types of movies are great for couples who are at least one month into the relationship, but for first timers, it gets completely awkward. If you do decide to see a film with romance, make sure that it is light on romance and heavy on comedy. Might I suggest romantic comedies like “She’s Out Of My League” or “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” the type of movies that aren’t too romantic and provide comedy to lighten the mood. Which do you think will turn your date off more: watching a woman getting beaten and raped like in “Showgirls” or “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” or watching a movie where a cute little animal, like a puppy or a piglet, dies like in “Marley and Me?” Think ahead and check out the content of the film online to avoid any crying fits — from either of you. Again, this isn’t advice for people who are just looking to get lucky on the first date. If you really want to have something special, then you definitely want to avoid making the wrong impression. Just as a precaution, you might want to avoid films like “Friends with Benefits” and “No Strings Attached,” which basically center on sexual relationships. I know what you are probably thinking: Pixar movies are the greatest films ever made and she will no doubt enjoy it. True, Pixar films do sound like ideal date films ... if you’re anywhere between eight and 12. Besides, don’t you think that you might want to show her your cuter side later on in the relationship? Plain and simple. Nobody looks sexy wearing those big, 3-D glasses.

Whoever said the Golden Globes are great predictors for the Academy Awards clearly needs to take a glance at this year’s nominations — it’s the most bizarre Oscar race we’ve had in a while.

The 69th annual Golden Globe awards will be airing Jan. 15 on NBC. Hosted again by English actor Ricky Gervais, who garnered controversy last year for his brash and sometimes churlish shtick, the show is a great predictor of the Academy Awards, and is the first major film and television awards show of the season. Certain to be filled with glamorous attire, victories, letdowns and steals, the Golden Globes will be a night of pure entertainment. With so many competitive film, television shows and actors, we’ve picked our winners, should-be-winners and the ones who got cheated with no nomination at all for three of the biggest awards of the night.

Now that the fall season of "artsy," award-worthy film is over, it's now time to look onward to the holiday season where Hollywood studios sneak in the big-budget, crowd-pleasing blockbusters. We have seen this in recent years with films like "Avatar" (2009) and "Tron: Legacy" (2010). However, it's also the time when studios screen last-minute award-worthy films before the Oscar season begins. Here are films to look out for.

After you have awoken from your turkey stupor and emotionally recovered from your Black Friday manslaughtering, you will realize the most lucrative and "magical" time of the year is upon us: Christmas.

With the upcoming holiday season, movie studios are preparing to release Christmas films (Can I say that? Or is it “holiday” films?) that will offer the sugary sweet lessons of family and the true meaning of Christmas. Spoiler alert: They all center on the things that are really, beneath all the holiday chaos, important in life.

Under the direction of Hollywood juggernaut George Clooney, "The Ides of March" is like the anti-"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939), centering on the idea that nothing distorts idealism more than politics.
