Prior to Sunday’s game, seniors Khadijah Sessions, Tiffany Mitchell, Asia Dozier, Sarah Imovbioh — who has only played one year at South Carolina — and Tina Roy had 115 wins against just 17 losses in their four seasons playing basketball for the Gamecocks. The team needed a win against the Louisiana State University Tigers Sunday to move to 28-1 on the season, 16-0 in SEC play and for the seniors to notch their 116th win at USC. And win they did, with a score of 75-39.

With Sunday's home matchup with LSU approaching, the South Carolina women's basketball team finds itself in the same position as last season: one win away from a perfect 16-0 against SEC opponents. The Gamecocks are hoping to find more success than they did in last year's regular season finale, when they traveled to Kentucky, and the Wildcats handed the visitors their only loss in league play. That loss forced the Gamecocks into a tie with Tennessee atop the conference standings, making the two teams co-champions.

With four games left in conference play and South Carolina sitting second in the SEC, Wednesday's 84-58 beatdown against Tennessee brings the Gamecocks a game behind the SEC leaders, Kentucky. If the Gamecocks hold their place or do better, then they would receive a first-round bye in the SEC tournament at the beginning of March.

Frank Martin is done messing around. As March nears and the SEC race begins its sprint to the finish line, Martin seems to have decided that the formula to winning this year is by playing those who have won in past years and sitting those who have not.

The business interests of college basketball as a marketable product will more often than not take precedent over the interests of student athletes, contrary to what the NCAA might say. One painfully obvious example is the increasing frequency of the 9 p.m. tipoff times.

Heading into the final week of regular season play, the South Carolina women’s basketball team is 13-0 in conference play, having already defeated all of the SEC’s top teams, three of which were in the top ten at the time. With Thursday’s win over Georgia, the Gamecocks clinched the outright regular season title in the SEC, but with their final three games coming against the three worst teams in the conference, coach Dawn Staley’s team is expected to achieve perfection.

In 2005, the NBA changed the rules regarding when players could declare for the draft, requiring players to be 19 years of age before being able to pursue a professional basketball career. This system has created a pattern of one-and-dones, where the nation’s best players essentially agree to a one-year deal before jumping ship for the money and fame of the NBA.

All college basketball fans know the pain of watching the future of their team, their star freshman, go professional after one promising year. Every NBA team has wasted a draft pick on a freshman, drafting purely off potential, only to see that all they had drafted was a young kid with an overwhelming likelihood to bust. And each year, everyone can point to a freshman who obviously wasn’t ready for the NBA but chose to go pro because they knew that with one turn of the knee their huge signing bonus, and maybe their chances of going pro altogether, could disappear.

This season of college basketball has provided a surplus of upsets, resulting in a great amount of parity among the top teams in the nation. Villanova, the top-ranked team in Monday’s AP Top 25, has racked up three losses on the season, on par with Southern Methodist University, who is ineligible for the postseason, and fellow mid-majors Xavier and Dayton. It seems that a top team is knocked off at least once each week, and there is no dominant favorite heading into March as there have been in past seasons, nor is there a team chasing perfection as Kentucky did last season.
