Addison tweeted, “Columbia it was fun while it lasted but I gotta get me! Peace outtttt *smoky voice* lol” on Saturday afternoon. He then tweeted to freshman wide receiver Damiere Byrd that he was looking at North Alabama or Murray State as destinations to transfer.
Addison played in five games this season, tallying just three total tackles. Before choosing the Gamecocks, the Jacksonville, Fla. Native considered UCF, Florida, and Miami, as well as other programs.
Addison was expected to be a bigger part of the secondary this season after appearing in eight games in 2010, but struggled to get significant playing time behind D.J. Swearinger and Sharrod Golightly.
USC commitment Shaq Roland wins Mr. Football for South Carolina:
Lexington High wide receiver and South Carolina commit Shaq Roland won South Carolina’s Mr. Football on Friday night.
Roland marks the fourth-straight USC commit to win the state’s top honor for a high school football player. The past three winners are defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, tailback Marcus Lattimore, and cornerback Stephon Gilmore, respectively.
Though Roland was utilized in a number of roles at Lexington, he’s expected to be a deep-threat in the receiving game, possibly replacing Alshon Jeffery, who’s expected to forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft.
Here is a highlight video of Roland from his senior season at Lexington High.
Coaching carousel:
With the number of head coaching vacancies at football programs across America, there’s been a lot of speculation surrounding the South Carolina coaching staff.
In the wake of Larry Fedora leaving Southern Miss for the head coaching position at North Carolina, USC associate head coach for defense Ellis Johnson has been listed as a candidate to replace Fedora at USM.
Here is the Hattiesburg American story that references Johnson, as well as the story from the Sun-Herald.
After Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett was fired on Friday, rumors began to circulate about USC wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr. replacing him. Here is the story from the SportsTalk.
Also, if you haven’t seen this before, here’s the video of Bennett’s presser that got aired on ESPN for its pure hilarity. I highly recommend watching, even if you have already seen it.
In other coaching news, Georgia’s Mark Richt will likely get an extension soon. Richt started the season on the hot seat after losing the first two games of the season. He was rumored to be heading to Texas A&M to fill that head coaching vacancy, but the Aggies hired Houston’s Kevin Sumlin today.
In the Pac-12, UCLA has hired Jim Mora to replace Rick Neuheisel. Washington’s Steve Sarkisian was rumored to have been heading there, but it appears he will stay at Washington for now. The rumor that had former Alabama coach Mike Shula as a possible replacement for Charlie Weis as Florida’s offensive coordinator has been squashed, as numerous outlets have reported that it’s false and unlikely to occur.
If I had a vote…
If I had a Heisman vote, and I don’t, it would go like this:
- Robert Griffin III, quarterback, Baylor
- Trent Richardson, running back, Alabama
- Andrew Luck, quarterback, Stanford
Griffin has been a one-man show all season, getting Baylor national attention when they’re usually regarded as one of the bottom-feeders of the Big-12. His numbers are also better than Luck’s.
As for why I would put Richardson over Wisconsin’s Montee Ball, I put more stock into a running back who’s been able to shred SEC defenses and carry his team to a National Championship berth. Ball has had quarterback Russell Wilson to fall back on, while Richardson has been the guy on offense for the Tide.
Tweet of the Day: @IzzyGould: Tyrann Mathieu..."looking at Trent you think he's a cold-blooded guy. He's really a sweetheart."
Sports story that will get overlooked because of other sports headlines: From ESPN.com, North Carolina, Charlotte to meet in final: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7337211/charlotte-49ers-north-carolina-tar-heels-advance-men-soccer-final-penalty-kick-victories
Fun fact: The Gamecocks played both Charlotte and UNC during the regular season. USC had a 2-1 victory over the 49ers, but fell 4-0 to the Tarheels.
Must-see video: Here is the video of Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin after the brawl in the conclusion of the Cincinnati at Xavier game. Cronin answered the questions with honesty and class. If I’m a parent of an athlete, I want my kid to play for this guy.
