As the Obama administration continually bashed Fox News as being a research arm for the Republican Party and tried to bar them from the White House press pool, the only thing I could think was “Oh my god. If they ban Fox from direct access to the White House, what other freedoms of the press might this administration go after next?”

But over the past two weeks my view on that front has changed.

A multitude of sources — from Mediamatters.org to John Stewart, host of The Daily Show — have recently reported that Fox News actually said that “9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays” is when they run objective news programs. The rest, they say, is editorial (or opinion) programming.

Now, for those of you who for one reason or another might not know, Fox News Channel is a 24-hour news network that uses the slogan “Fair and Balanced” to describe its programming. It has become blatantly obvious, solely based off of its own statements, that Fox News has become a blatant contradiction.

First off, if a 24-hour station is going to call itself a “news” station, it should probably run more than nine hours of objective news programming.

Secondly, if you openly admit that the majority of programming provided to the public from your station is opinionated, you should not be able to run the slogan “Fair and Balanced” under your logo.

Finally, if you only run nine hours of objective news programming on a 24-hour “news” channel and you admit to running a majority of opinionated programs while boasting the slogan “Fair and Balanced,” you should at least promote your “news” channel with the people who actually are providing the news during Fox’s 9 hours of objective programming.
But when you see a commercial for Fox News Channel you don’t see Jill Dobson, Kimberly Guilefoyle Newsom or Reena Ninan (I’ve never heard of them either, don’t worry) being promoted. You see Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly — all of whom are on during Fox’s designated opinion hours.

Let’s recap for a second here; we have a 24-hour network that calls itself a “news channel” that only runs nine hours of objective news programming a day. That leaves 15 hours where Fox news runs editorial programming while still maintaining that their programming is “Fair and Balanced.” This “news channel” doesn’t promote itself with the names or faces of its news anchors, but instead uses editorial hosts in most of its advertisements.

How anyone can legitimately think that this is how a news organization is supposed to work is beyond me. I honestly could care less if you watch this un-journalistic abomination of a “Fair and Balanced” network, but if you think that Glenn Beck is giving you news you are sorely mistaken.

I once believed that banning Fox news from the White House press pool would be a breach of freedom of the press, but I now see why the Obama administration has taken the stand that they have; “Fair and Balanced” Fox News Channel might not lie about facts or report false information, but the very name of their network and the slogan they’ve beaten into the heads of their viewers is a lie. It’s a slap in the face to anyone who gets their news from them, a black eye on the face of network news and a kick to the groin of a freshmen journalism major who still believes that there is room for objectivity in the world of reporting.

msnbc i completly is opinionated full of spin and flase reporting! have you seen the clip of them calling anti-obama protesters supporting thier second amendment rights white racist, they had too zoom in on the guy with the rifle to hide the fact that he was black! you dont see the white house not granting them acess. maybe its because they back obama? this move by the white house is totaly beyond the pale of how the government of a free nation should behave and is total hippocracy.

Oh to be, what, 22 or 23, and think you have it all figured out. Bryan, the basis for your argument is that it is alright for the White House to ignore Fox News because their slogan is "Fair and Balanced." Using this faulty logic I can ignore the Obama administration because he ran for president on the slogans "Hope" and "Change." Do a little research on the people within the administration and you will find that the "Change" really means recycled Clinton administration members, and I'm still waiting it find out what the "Hope" was recycled into. No news is completely fact based. The closest I've found is the Associated Press. So when you perform your ''research" using a comedy show host's statement as your "thesis" maybe you should also look at all the other "news" networks. One piece of advice as you start out your "journalism" career, don't say anything negative about the president, or he may not invite you over for any "private" meetings either.

FOX may be biased and unbalanced, but that's no reason to bar the network from the WH press pool, any more than it would have been right for Bush II to bar MSNBC because of its over-the-top "anchors" like Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz and Chris Matthews, all of them liberal thinkers (Rachel Maddow is, too, but at least she's fair). And MSNBC does have conservative Joe Scarborough, which makes it balanced to a degree. Bush II, by the way, did try to bar the New York Times and when that failed his press secretaries just ignored the paper's questions. When any political party, corporation, religion, whatever, is allowed to handpick which news outlets are welcome to cover it and which are not, that is the first step toward Hell, namely any country that controls the media.

Oh, and by the way, it's not "I honestly could care less if you watch ..." It's "I honestly couldn't care less ..."

I completely agree with Bill. Everyone is so quick to point out FOX's faults because they are a conservative news organization and don't kiss Obama's ass. How would Cnn measure up in "total news" hours? Sorry Bryan, but you are extremely misguided when it comes to freedom of the press. And if you seriously consider John Stewart from the Daily Show, your lack of examples and sources seriously lacks credibility. John Stewart is openly liberal and loves nothing better than to make fun of conservatives. He completely contradicts what your saying about bias in the media.

Congrats to you Bryan for being Obama's spokesperson for socialism. You are basically saying that it is okay for only news organizations that agree with Obama to report news and that everyone who disagreees does not deserve to report news. FOX is conservative just as MSNBC and CNN are liberal. Would you like the United States to become like other communist countries where media is CONTROLLED by the government and people are fed news that supports everything the government does? FOX exposes Obama for who he truly is and is no more biased than MSNBC. And to Hilary, you are a weak minded and ignorant person if you will stand by MSNBC and say that they are not biased. FOX News should be applauded for their truthful reporting of what the Obama administration is really doing. So,if you are interested in government controlled media with no free press or room for disagreement, I suggest you move to a country that is not as fortunate to have freedom.

Hey Bill, "viewpoints" or opinion columns are suppose to be on the person's opinion so really it is allowed to be biased. It seems like no one has anything better to do than critizise someone's writing. If you have such strong opinions maybe you should join the newspaper staff.

Fox News consistently advocates privatization, deregulation, tax-cuts for the wealthy and the elimination of social programs for the poor. This is a utopian-Right policy agenda. The media in general goes out of its way to ensure that people like Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney are blessed with headlines while ignoring far-Left voices like Sam Webb or near-Left voices like Gregory Pason or Bernie Sanders. Seriously, have you heard anyone on MSNBC advocate the abolition of private property or a worker take-over of industry? I can't believe so many Americans have been duped into believing that our media is "Left-leaning" when, time after time, they choose to highlight the views of the extreme Right. Wake up!

Your reliance on "A multitude of sources — from Mediamatters.org to John [sic] Stewart, host of The Daily Show " suggests your own bias in the matter. Try broadening your horizons and you may reach a different conclusion. For example, your acid test appears to be the number of hours per day devoted to "objective news programs." How would ABC News, CBS News, et al. measure up on this standard? They're small slices of 24-hour entertainment networks, yet they're unchallenged members of the White House pool. What about CNN--does Larry King qualify as objective, hard news in your scheme of things? What's the daily total of objective news on CNN? I fear that you have fallen for a political argument against conservative dissent rather than reached a careful, generally applicable principle for answering the question posed about freedom of the press.

Yeah you are right Bryan we should all watch the impartial rants of MSNBC. Journalism means having the backbone to take your "own stand" not what you read and hear from Keith Olberman. Or maybe it was Rachel Maddow? Oh well plenty of time to think of some "original" rants while you are waiting in line for health care. Liberal education at it's best. Good luck with the double the cost of premiums in the years to come. Heavy sigh.

Alumni: "Today's consumer of info wants opinion and hard news."

Alumni, couldn't it be that today's consumer actually just wants flashy graphics and so-called "Breaking News" every 30 seconds. The average American consumer is a moron. Anyone who actually believes that Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS or any other mainstream media outlet are objective is living in a fantasy world. They are all crap. They are all equally worthless. And they share a large part of the responsibility for the dumbing-down of America. The government at all its levels shoulders the other part of the responsibility through its monstrously awful public school system, its abominable federal machine, and its trashing of the Constitution.
Fox isn't the problem, nor is CNN, or Jon Stewart, or Glenn Beck, or any other scapegoats people want to blame for our society's ongoing and worsening disorder. They are symptoms of a large society-wide failure.

Why did Glen Beck dress as a Nazi on his last book?

Was that a costume from his personal collection?

FOX News' formula of hard news and conservative opinion is working well for them as they are the #1 cable news channel in America by a ratings margin of 3-1. Today's consumer of info wants opinion and hard news. FOX is crying all the way to the bank.

I agree with some of your article. I have come to the conclusion that to get a "fair and balanced" idea of what the news really is you have to watch several newscasts. The mainstream media outlets, abc , nbc, cnn, etc. are not objective in their reporting of the Obama administration either. It amazes me how many people watch the likes of Glenn Beck or John Stewart and think they are getting the "news" Every media outlet has an axe to grind be it conservative or liberal. Fox News serves a purpose to give a counterpoint to the Obama adminstration just as the mainstream outlets pounded the Bush Administration while they were in power . I don't know about "fair" but Fox News gives some "balance" to the kid glove treatment the mainstream press gives the Obama Adminstration.
