In our opinion: Rise in permits means more informed owners

People who disregard the law in purchasing weapons are the ones to worry about with crime.

The number of new concealed weapons permits being issued has skyrocketed for South Carolina this year, following an upwards national trend and nearly doubling last year’s annual record, according to The State.
Thus far, SLED as issued more than 28,000 permits this year, and the figures show that along with the rise in permits, more people, particularly women, are purchasing handguns.
It’s easy to argue that guns kill people, and that an increase in gun ownership jeopardizes public safety — but that is just the problem, it’s too easy.
There are two different gun owners: those who go through the law and those who do not. It may seem simple enough, but too often people overlook this crucial distinction, and these statistics are not about the illegal purchasing of stolen handguns with no paper trail to hold anyone accountable.
We are glad to see South Carolinians going through the proper purchasing procedures, rules designed to keep guns out of the hands of those who use weapons for criminal and dangerous means.
In this state, citizens must be 21 years old, pass a background check and drug check and attend an 8-hour safety course — just a few of the rules before anyone can lay their hands on a concealed weapons permit, which they must carry at all times.
The people who disregard the law in purchasing weapons are the ones to worry about when it comes to crime and public safety — not John Smith down the street who keeps his gun locked in his nightstand to protect his family.
Possession of a firearm does not make someone dangerous — it’s improper use and knowledge of safety that causes problems. These statistics show that more and more South Carolinians are taking the proper initiatives to be informed and alert owners.
And for anyone ready to parallel increased weapons permits to safety in South Carolina — violent crime rates have dropped 13.5 percent in the last 10 years, according to The State.

That's right, if anybody says I'm not qualified to own a gun, I'll kill them! I'm tired of shooting at my imaginary friends anway. They never go away! I want to take my strap into Wal-Mart and fire off a couple rounds into a cantaloupe! If anybody tries to stop me, I'll kill them! And then eat the cantaloupe..and maybe a bag of Doritos. Take that Stalin!

Melinda (assuming this is the same poster I'm thinking of), about two weeks ago you wrote that people should essentially shut up and listen to the police no matter what. But now you defend the right of citizens to defend themselves against the government. I think your stance has more to do with who is in power rather than the idea of a Leviathan state. Something tells me you wouldn't have bought your CWP if the neocons were still in office. Wasn't the last administration "far reaching" enough? Why didn't you go out and buy your CWP when the neocons forced the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act through Congress?
The Republicans and the Democrats --- excuse me, the Republicrats --- are both EXACTLY the same. They are merely two sides of the same coin. The Republicans wish to lead us into a hell of ongoing, continuous warfare, and the Democrats wish to lead us into an equally abysmal state of total, all-consuming welfare. No matter how you frame it, whether continuous warfare or welfare (or more likely, a hodgepodge of both), our rights are trampled. You should have been equally incensed as you are now when Bush and his cronies sent our country into a nosedive. Republicans and Democrats are the same. So-called "conservatives" and "liberals" are absolute fictions. Neither side has any clue what conservative or liberal actually mean.
Basically: the grand ol' U.S. of A. is screwed.

More guns equals less crime.
Who would of thunk it, although it makes a lot of sense.

Hey Rothbard...the time of dictatorship is closer than you think. I am a middle aged at home mom and I celebrated the last election day getting my concealed weapons permit. Not only would I like to reach into my car's pocket to protect me and my children, I would like to have it in my purse if necessary. If the government does become "far reaching" there will not be a collection of handguns on my property. They will have to fight for them and then pry mine out of my cold dead fingers...or vice versa.

Your article gives the impression that one must have a concealed weapons permit (CWP) to purchase a firearm, which is not true. One must have a CWP to carry a concealed weapon. To legally purchase a firearm from a licensed firearms dealer, a background check must be completed. That background check does not have anything to do with a CWP and a trainging course is not required for simple purchases. Additionally, shotguns and rifles may be purchased by someone 18 or older. Handguns are restricted to individuals 21 and older. One may legally transport a firearm in their glove-box, center console, or trunk without a CWP.

Furthermore, simply because a firearm is purchased through private transaction does not mean that someone is trying to circumvent the law. Many private transactions are carried out for legally obtained firearms. Private sales are extremely important in guaranteeing the citizens right to bear arms. Two primary reasons for private sales are lower prices and not allowing the federal government to know that you own a firearm. The intent not to inform the federal government comes not from a desire to commit crimes, but out of fear of an overreaching federal monstrosity.

the only reason the government requires permits is not for the safety of its citizens but imagine if a dictator came to power wouldn't they want to know where all the guns are and be able to round them up in case it fears a revolution againsts its polices
