Leave comfort zone, be proactive in order to get most out of time overseas

If you’re considering studying abroad during your time at USC, I’m here to emphatically say, “Do it!” We’ve all heard the benefits of SA from either an information fair or University 101, but no amount of reading or listening to people talk about SA can live up to actually experiencing what it is like to live abroad.

Defense of Marriage Act violates 14th Amendment and must be repealed

While researching gay rights in our state, or lack thereof, for a class paper, I shamefully realized I had not been staying particularly up to date with an issue I feel passionate about. I was delighted to discover that in February, President Barack Obama and his administration declared they would no longer defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), only to become disheartened they aren’t really going to do anything about its repeal. However, Democrats in Congress have recently begun efforts to repeal the act through a bill entitled the Respect for Marriage Act. Needless to say, House Speaker John Boehner and Republicans have launched their own efforts on the defensive side of the DOMA spectrum.

Making changes now will protect planet for future generations

It's been a while since I graduated from USC. When I left, Jimmy Carter had just been elected president and Elvis was still shaking his then-considerable hips on stages across America.

Chivalry almost dead at USC

I am a woman, and sometimes I get irrationally angry over things.

Mental health in bad shape in US

Brain Awareness Week highlights inadequacy of preventative care

The state of mental health in this country is abysmal. In 2006, the U.S. ranked first internationally for mental illness, and nearly half of all Americans met the requirements for mental illness at some point in their lives. Also, more than a fourth of adults suffer from a mental illness every year.

Guest column: "War on cannabis" harms addicts

I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, as my future profession is that of an addiction counselor. So this viewpoint I am about to share is very personal, as it will one day affect me. It already has in other parts and times of my life, and this is why I feel cannabis should be legalized.

A couple of weeks ago, many schools and universities were closed in observance of the accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. Demonstrations and celebrations took place around the country, all seeking to spread the message of love and to pay homage to the memory of the man who taught people of all backgrounds, creeds and experiences to come together and stand up for justice and equal rights, but most importantly, to understand and respect the ideals of all people. King's speeches stood for the absolute and unconditional love that in 2011, especially on MLK Day, I did not sense in Columbia.
