Women's golf captures 2nd tournament win of season

Madsen earns top individual honors over weekend

The No. 2 South Carolina women's golf team continued its dominant start to the year over the weekend, winning its second tournament of the young season.

The Gamecocks took top honors at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in Tennessee behind a 13-over performance that saw them finish 14 strokes better than the second-place team.

South Carolina's victory was an exercise in finishing Sunday. The Gamecocks entered the last day in third place, but a 3-under final round as a team completed the charge as a decisive win.

Individually, it took freshman Nanna Madsen just three tournaments to earn her first tournament championship. Her 1-under performance was the best of all competitors this weekend, after she finished 10th and fifth in South Carolina's first two tournaments, respectively.

Junior Mary Fran Hillow carded a record-breaking final round Sunday to finish in a tie for second place on the tournament. Her 65 on the last day was the best ever for both the tournament and the South Carolina program.

The Gamecocks will turn right around and get back on the course starting Friday at The Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, North Carolina.
