Day trip: Clemson

If you are making your way to Clemson this weekend, set aside some extra time to see the sights. Pace yourself — you don’t want to exhaust your options too quickly. After all, Clemson’s Wikipedia page has six articles under “Things to do.”

Pastures: It may be slowly turning into a suburban conglomerate, but Clemson is staying true to its agricultural roots. Salvage your sense of nature with a trip to one of the town’s many pastures. Disregarding city limits, these landowners are masters of their craft — between several of Clemson’s nicest housing developments lay several fields, featuring real life livestock. There’s something charming about upper-middle class privilege living harmoniously with the smell of manure.

Chicken Beach: Only real Clemson locals know about this beautiful little slice of paradise. Tucked away in a corner of Lake Hartwell, it’s where students retreat for a good time. Although no chickens are actually hatched here, this is where MIPs are born. Go ahead, take your shoes off, feel the sand and broken glass between your toes.

Roller Coaster Road: If you can’t afford a ticket to Carowinds, have no fear — Clemson’s “Roller Coaster Road” is a sad substitute, regardless of how enthusiastic locals are about it. Located in a tranquil neighborhood, this street consists of two reasonably large hills with a speed limit of 15 mph. Drive at your own risk — 16-year-olds driving their mom’s minivan recklessly paired with narrow streets make for a wild ride.
