Annual event platform for cool spring trends
Celebrities donned gowns from the likes of Oscar de la Renta and Roberto Cavalli for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California Sunday evening.
The most prominent color on the carpet was red, worn by Katrina Bowden in a draped floor length Max Azria, Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta and Mila Kunis in a strapless flame print Alexander McQueen Resort 2011 gown.
Another trend that popped up throughout the night was lace, featured on the likes of Nicole Kidman in Nina Ricci and Dianna Agron in a vintage black lace over midnight blue Chanel Haute Couture dress. Baby bumps seemed to be a trend as well with pregnant both Jane Krakowski and Natalie Portman on the carpet. Krakowski was in a sparkling one-shouldered Badgley Mischka, and Portman featured Azzaro and over two million dollars worth of jewelry from Tiffany and Company. The trends weren’t all good though, as fourth-year English student Cori Hanky, staff stylist to Garnet and Black, pointed out.
“Of all the awards shows, the SAG Awards wins ‘Most Aptly Named’ in terms of fashion, as sagging styles seemed to be the unfortunate name of the game Sunday evening,” Hanky said.
While the best-dressed of the night may be subjective, January Jones certainly made a statement. It wasn’t the same skin flashing statement she made in her Versace at the Golden Globes, but instead the gold over black, sheer, Chantilly lace Carolina Herrera pre-fall 2011 gown conveyed a sense of sophistication and elegance that can’t be ignored.
While underwhelmed by the looks as a whole, USC Fashion Board President, fourth-year retail student Marquis Bias named Portman and Jones best-dressed for the night, followed by Mila Kunis and Tina Fey.
Other notables included Jennifer Lawrence in a hot pink Oscar de la Renta pre-fall 2011 gown accessorized with a black belt and handbag, as well as Hailee Steinfeld in an eye-catching striped Prada Spring 2011 multicolored gown.
