The Gamecock women's tennis team kicked off its 2023-24 season with a 2-0 record after defeating the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and Presbyterian Blue Hoses on Jan. 21, 2024. Juniors Sarah Hamner and Misa Malkin performed claimed a 6-3 doubles victory against the Chanticleers. Graduate student Ayana Akli secured a win in her singles match, 6-3, 5-0, and graduate student Elise Mills also dominated her singles match, going 6-0, 6-1. The South Carolina men's basketball team defeated Mississippi State on Jan. 6, 2024, at Colonial Life Arena. The Gamecocks faced the Bulldogs in the opening game of SEC play for the season and are now 13-1 for the sixth time in school history.


The Gamecocks for Israel student organization at USC held a rally on Dec. 7, 2023, to show support for Israel and call for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Members of the Jewish community in Columbia and allies gathered on Greene Street while Jewish students and community leaders gave speeches. Speakers included second-year international business student and president of Hillel at USC Casey Fitzgerald, Rabbi Sruly Epstein of Chabad at USC and Alpha Epsilon Pi President Bari Klarberg. The rally was interrupted by a group of pro-Palestine counter-protestors but quickly resumed after campus police and several members of the rally intervened.

Tiger Burn marks the start of rivalry week between the University of South Carolina and Clemson University with the burning of a giant wooden tiger. This year's tiger was constructed by students from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. The tradition at South Carolina stems from the 1902 upset victory over Clemson where a drawing featuring a gamecock over a beaten tiger frustrated Clemson students, leading to an agreement from both universities to burn the poster. The 2023 Palmetto Bowl will take place on Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Williams-Brice Stadium.


Finnish DJ Darude performed a mix of music from his discography, including songs from his newest album, "Together," and his hit single "Sandstorm," at a pre-game concert at Gamecock Park. Once in the stadium, Darude visited the sidelines and student section, and he DJ'd during the Gamecocks' game against Kentucky. The musician's song was first played by South Carolina in a game against Ole Miss in 2009 and has since become a Gamecock tradition.

Members of the United Campus Workers union at the University of South Carolina held a speak-out event on the Russell House patio on Oct. 26, 2023. The workers union held the event to call for higher wages for university workers and encouraged attendees to sign the union's petition.


The South Carolina State Fairgrounds debuted its 154th running of the annual state fair from Oct. 11 to Oct. 22, 2023. The fair featured carnival rides, concessions, live entertainment, a petting zoo, a circus and more. The CIRCUS at the Fair returned for its fourth consecutive tour at the South Carolina State Fair, holding daily shows at 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. throughout the entirety of the fair. The circus featured new acts from Laser Man Gimi Fornaciari, diabolo artist Chu Chuan-Ho, cloud swing aerialist Susan Vidbel and others. Ringmaster Ian Garden, Renaldo the Clown and the aerial motorcycle duo Alex and Sofia Petrov returned for this year's circus. The cast featured a vast range of experience, with many of the artists and employees having previously worked for traveling shows on a national and international scale. The fair attracts an average of 400,000 visitors annually and employs locals as well as people from all over the United States and abroad. Both the circus and the state fair will return in October 2024.

The Free Palestine Emergency Demonstration, held in front of the South Carolina Statehouse, was organized by the North and South Carolina Party for Social Liberation and USC Students for Justice on Oct. 17, 2023. People from across the city and beyond gathered to show their support for the Palestinian cause through signs and chants.
