Laura Kissel was 7 years old when she first asked her parents for a camera, and she was met with a resounding no. At the age of 12, she borrowed her father’s camera on vacation and never gave it back. Since then, she has become a documentary filmmaker and uses her work to inspire people to think more deeply about real world problems.

A storm that has caused damage across the South reached Columbia on Sunday, bringing gusts up to 74 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. As small branches and debris filled the roads, thousands of houses in Lexington and Richland counties lost power — at around 2:30 p.m., as many as 50,000 were in the dark. SCE&G reported 354 outage-causing incidents, mainly falling tree branches, in the two counties.

Undergraduate English society INK! held a campus-wide literary festival April 13, featuring many critical essays and original creative pieces by University of South Carolina students. Awards were given in two categories — literary analysis and creative writing — with four students receiving prizes for their work.

Healthy masculinity workshops teaching about the roles of masculinity in society and relationships have been held throughout the spring semester. The workshops started on Jan. 31, but very few people have attended, sometimes including the instructor.

Denim Day began 19 years ago in Italy when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a decision about a sexual assault case because the victim was wearing jeans. The jeans were tight, and the justices believed that the victim had to have helped the assaulter remove her jeans, suggesting that she gave consent. The next day, the women of the Italian Parliament went to work wearing jeans, protesting the decision.

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and is devoted to educating people about sexual violence and consent. On a local level, USC requires that every student complete Haven, an online course dedicated to teaching incoming students about sexual assault. This week, the university will be holding multiple events for students hoping to learn more and participate in spreading awareness on campus.
