After four long years of the Trump administration, where each week brings a new national scandal and the country languishes in a state of national malaise, the 2020 presidential election can hopefully bring the political change America so desperately needs.
Socialism is having a moment in America. The ideology has been highly taboo for generations, yet for the first time in America’s political history, it seems safe to label oneself a socialist. In fact, the majority of democrats now openly identify as such, something that would have been inconceivable just a generation ago. With our long and sordid history of Red Scares and McCarthyism, a sudden love affair with socialism is both bizarre and oddly refreshing.
Philosophy doesn’t get much respect these days. The discipline is frequently equated with self-indulgent, navel-gazing armchair theorizing, and philosophy degrees are often seen as being worth less than the paper they’re printed on.
In response to the horrific acts of terror carried out in Christchurch earlier this month, the Australian and New Zealand governments have censored the internet in a futile attempt to prevent future terrorism.
If you’ve ever set foot on a college campus, chances are you’ve seen someone JUULing. The ubiquitous vice is as common as smoking was in the naïve days of America’s past, and within the past year has taken the college world by storm. Needless to say, the phenomenon is a controversial one.
Despite my disagreement with his politics, I genuinely respect Bernie Sanders. The man is a true maverick, and he delivered a much-needed challenge to the Clinton democratic orthodoxy in 2016.
Of all of the contentious political issues facing our nation today, I believe none are more dire than the threat posed by climate change. It’s hard not to fall into pessimistic despair when confronted with the sheer scope of the environmental havoc we wreak upon the earth each day.
Hillary Clinton’s former campaign chairman John Podesta revealed this week that “Hillary 2020” is out of the question. Ever since her startling defeat at the tiny hands of one of the most unqualified men ever to seriously run for office, there’s been much media speculation as to whether or not a potential 2016 rematch is in the works. With that question finally laid to rest, the Democrats can now work on forging a path forward and can complete the rebranding of their party that is currently underway.
In the age of social media, it seems that there’s always a burning controversy over some idiotic thing or another. Rage mobs are as ubiquitous as memes on the internet, and not one news cycle goes by without someone blowing something out of proportion.
When I saw the trailer for the upcoming "Lion King" remake, I couldn’t help but wonder what the point is. The original movie won’t be improved upon in any meaningful way, and this hollow CGI cash-grab will never supplant the 1994 version in the public consciousness. The only reason this movie is being made is because it gives Disney a chance to rake in money without having to put in the effort of actually coming up with a creative story.
Anyone who’s been paying even the slightest attention has by now heard of the string of terrorist acts and attempted terrorist attacks carried out over the past few weeks. The sudden surge in home-grown right-wing terrorism reflects the horrid state of American politics, with some citizens deciding to voice their opinions with bullets and bombs rather than ballots.
Everywhere you look today, democracy seems to be under siege. From Hungary to the Philippines, democracy is clearly in crisis as populist and authoritarian figures rise to power across the globe. In addition to the usual right-wing suspects, democracy now also faces a new and potentially insurmountable adversary: our present climate catastrophe.
Perhaps the single most positive political development in the United States over the past decade has been the clear movement away from prohibition when it comes to the world’s most widely used illicit substance. These days, a clear majority of U.S. citizens support the legalization of marijuana and more and more states are moving towards legalizing the drug in some capacity, be it medicinal or recreational. New Jersey seems poised to legalize the drug eventually and as the years go by it seems inevitable that more and more states will continue to make the sensible decision toward legalization.
One thing that the presidency of Donald Trump has shown is that it’s imperative that our president is of sound mind. President Trump’s behavior over the course of his presidency has been downright bizarre at times, and his actions have raised serious questions over his mental fitness.
The recent shooting of Botham Jean is arguably the single most egregious instance of a police officer taking the life of an innocent civilian in recent memory. Shot while sitting in his own apartment and minding his own business by an off-duty officer who mistook his apartment for hers, the shooting seems to be a pretty unambiguous case of manslaughter. Not content with merely taking his life though, the Dallas police have decided to add insult to injury by scouring through Jean’s belongings in what amounted to a desperate attempt at smearing the victim.
The death of John McCain has, perhaps more than any event since the dawn of the Trump era, united partisans from across the aisles in the mourning and celebration of a man almost universally hailed as a genuine American hero and political maverick.
In the wake of the shocking death of Maryland football player Jordan McNair, South Carolina coach Will Muschamp came out strongly against the handling of the incident based on a report put out by ESPN. The report, detailing an allegedly toxic environment at Maryland and the culpability of head coach DJ Durkin in the tragic death of McNair, utilized many anonymous sources, something Muschamp took issue with.
The Fourth of July has come and passed and children are still separated from their families. Much has been said about how the policy of tearing families apart, and detaining young children in what can only be described as cages is an affront to the ideals of our nation. The whole business is utterly cruel. While the policy itself has been suspended by the Trump administration and a deadline for the return of the children has been set by the courts, the fact that it even happened in the first place is ridiculous. Former first ladies, Holocaust survivors and international leaders have all harshly criticized the policy, and their concerns resonate with a majority of Americans.
America and capitalism are so closely intertwined in the popular mind that the two are basically synonymous. McDonald’s and Walmart are national symbols just as much as the Statue of Liberty and Mt. Rushmore.
