There is no doubt that afternoon football games can suck due to how extremely hot it can be. Few if any enjoy standing in the stadium, which is practically an oven during these games, while being blasted by the sun. In fact, this past Saturday was absolute hell for some before the rain hit with temperatures up in the 90s. These circumstances, combined with fans drinking alcohol, can lead to a lot of dehydration and potential for serious heat strokes.

Combat sports such as boxing, Muay Thai and wrestling are great activities that everyone should pick up. They provide too many benefits for someone to pass up. That being said, college students especially should pick up combat sports as our demographic can greatly benefit from it.

My mom once promised to take me to the store to get candy when I was a kid. It was right after a football game, and I had all these high expectations about what I wanted to get. I didn’t make any post-game plans with friends because I was dedicated to the idea of going to the store. Then, my mom cancelled the store trip, and it was too late for me to go hang with my friends. I felt so betrayed by my mom. And up until Saturday night, I'd never felt such betrayal again. But then, the school had to tweet out that classes were "uncanceled" on Monday.

Students spent a pleasant, relaxing summer away only to be backstabbed on their return — Russell House food was changed. Gone are Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and that quality Asian restaurant that no one knew the name of. Instead, frauds filled in their places and hid their food downgrades behind the niceties of a fancier looking food hall.

The practice of forming opinions before hearing all sides of the argument is common today. Media is fast-paced, and people seem to take the first thing they hear as their opinion. This is especially the case for those who listen to an agenda-based news network such as CNN or Fox News. This mindset needs to stop as citizens need to know both sides of the argument and all facts before creating their own opinions. The recent Yeti-National Rifle Association fiasco is a perfect example of this.

There is no denying that advisers are fundamental for college students’ success, but the current first-year adviser system does not do students justice. Instead, this system should be abolished and advisers should be around for the students’ whole college career.

With South Korea being the third largest provider of international students to the United States and a major provider to the University of South Carolina, the lack of a Korean language major here is baffling. This language is only growing in importance, for both students with plans to pursue public and private sector careers. The University of South Carolina already offers eight languages as minor and major courses of study — surely another important language should be added to this list.

Elon Musk did the incredible and tossed a car up into space. Some people view it as silly, but I love the stunt. The talk going on right now about space and the future of space exploration has definitely been reinvigorated by this move, and I could not be happier. Following the trip of Falcon Heavy, the rocket that carried the car up to space, Musk came out and said, “We want a new space race. Space races are exciting."

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” These words fall on deaf ears in China. The People’s Republic of China officially banned hip-hop and actors with tattoos from all media outlets, stating that it only provides its people with content that lacks “morality.” In reality, the authoritarian government simply disagrees with the messages from hip-hop and is trying to limit speech even more in the country. This most recent violation of the human right to freedom of speech only goes to show the pressing matter that is China’s control over its people.

Last week, the Big Ten announced a two year partnership with Riot Games, the creators of the video game “League of Legends.” This deal will create a conference for each of the 14 Big Ten universities to compete in. While there is already an official college league for "League of Legends," this deal will take college esports to the next level and help develop esport programs at the associated universities. Additionally, Riot Games is providing $35,000 in scholarships to each of the universities to be given among their team rosters, which is a huge step for recognizing the legitimacy of esports. All of this brings up the question: Why does the SEC not pursue a similar deal?

Net neutrality at its core revolves around internet providers ensuring that all content, websites and applications are accessible without hindrance. This means that a provider cannot slow your connection if you load a webpage that they disagree with, nor can it be paid by a company to block its competitors. Net neutrality also makes sure that new websites and services can start up their business and make them available to anyone with internet access, like any other service, and not have issues. This is important for the promotion of innovation and small business. Net neutrality is vital to ensure that all information is accessible, and yet there is a push to get rid of it. This push must be stopped, and net neutrality needs to stay.

Emergency call boxes are tools that the local police use to help protect University of South Carolina students. The call boxes are tall, have blue lights on the top and bear a red button. If a student is in an emergency, whether someone is following them, attacking them or something else, the student can hit the red button and police will rush to the scene. These are great for protecting students, especially freshmen who do not have cars and must walk at night. That is why they must be at all major places where freshmen walk.

The idea that the judicial branch should be a political force is distasteful, yet many people agree with it. The judicial branch must serve as a nonpolitical power that checks the other branches; it cannot continue to be politicized.

From ancient Celtic times to the modern day, Halloween has been a tradition that represents a fun way for children to exploit their neighbors for candy and for everyone to dress up in crazy costumes. It signifies a holiday in which people have fun. However, Halloween is now being politicized, and this needs to stop.

Imagine being part of a group that believes in an idea. Then taking that idea to the streets to express your fundamental right of freedom of speech in order for that idea to be heard. And then imagine your university, which you pay for with tuition and tax money, decides to shut you down. Why? It either disagrees with what you are saying or how you are saying it. Either way, it just suppressed your rights.

Catalonia is a region of Spain containing the city of Barcelona. Many Catalan people speak a completely different language than the rest of Spain and have an equally separate culture. Because of this, among many other reasons including taxes and cultural suppression, Catalonia seeks independence from Spain.
