Greenville. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, the booming city in the upstate where the SEC basketball tournament took place and half of friends are from. Road trips. They can be the stuff of nightmares: flat tires, irritable car-mates, and constant bathroom breaks. But road trips can be great, they can be filled with laughter, guilty pleasure gas station snacks and winding conversations that last for hours — and it all has to do with music.
A great road trip playlist is crucial to the whole “journey not the destination” logic behind days-long trips across country or a necessary drive to school. Many types of playlists exist, you can go the nostalgia route with lots of 90s rock tunes and hip hop from the 2000’s that transport you back to middle school dances, you can go the existential route, where soft ballads and broody grunge dudes lull you into a philosophical state that helps the dull hours in the car pass by.

SZA’s debut album, “Ctrl,” was a longtime coming. The alternative R&B artist began her tumultuous career in 2012. The then-21-year-old released her first E.P., “See.SZA.Run,” and then a follow up “S” on SoundCloud the following year.

It seems the only thing more exhausting than Katy Perry’s antics the last two months is the incessant onslaught of “good television” flooding our screens day after day. In the so-called “Peak TV” era, we as viewers are treated to an endless stream of enthralling storylines and fantastic performances weekly. You can watch Tyrion Lannister and co. on Sunday nights, weep-fest “This Is Us” on Tuesdays, Shonda Rhimes’ entire catalogue on Thursday nights and dozens of Netflix, Hulu or Amazon programs any time/day/place you want to.

Paleface (PF), a man with eclectic talents and eccentric sound, is a folksy singer-songwriter currently based out of Concord, North Carolina. What started as a solo act in the Village during the early nineties has evolved into a duo with PF on the guitar and vocals and girlfriend/collaborator Mo Samalot on the drums.

The filmmakers featured in the The New Nostalgia short film block at Indie Grits were trying to capture the effervescent. Those fleeting moments or oddball stories tucked away where no one can find them. The short film block, which screened eight short films from filmmakers and documentarians across the Southeast, is one of the two-day showings showcasing the “emotional archeologists” of Indie Grits.

New Brookland Tavern's Emo Prom Night was a collection of black clothes, somber faces and existentialistic music from the early 2000s. Classic emo music videos played on one wall, there was a photo booth for awkward prom pictures and the Prom King and Queen shared their first dance. There was even a proposal at the event — proving that you don't have to walk alone on the boulevard of broken dreams.
