Last month, for the first time in nearly 21 years, South Carolina reported a case of measles. SCDHEC has not yet stated whether the individual was vaccinated or whether this case is connected to the wider outbreak in the U.S., but, regardless, this is troubling news.

The USC add/drop date for the fall 2018, the deadline for deciding whether you want to keep a class for the semester or drop it without any consequences, was Aug. 29. Classes started this semester on Aug. 23. This gave students only about two class sessions to figure out if they wanted to keep a or course or not, which is just not enough time.

Labor Day is another one of those American holidays that, while celebrated with a day off, has lost much of its original meaning. Like Columbus Day or Thanksgiving, among others, Americans love to find any excuse to take off work without understanding why. Given that we take less vacation than Medieval peasants, people are often eager to get a day off, no questions asked.

What would you do if you found out your favorite Five Points bars are profiting from practices of racism and discrimination? The State reported Aug. 18 that bar owner, Matt Shmanske, owner of Moosehead Saloon, Latitude 22 and The Thirsty Parrot, is accused of trying to revamp a bar that had gone “too dark.”

I know one of the greatest appeals of reading the Daily Gamecock opinion section is to surround oneself with the brightest minds of our generation, who are never wrong nor contradict themselves. However, I am writing this to humbly express the revelation that I was wrong about Omarosa Manigault Newman.

The death of John McCain has, perhaps more than any event since the dawn of the Trump era, united partisans from across the aisles in the mourning and celebration of a man almost universally hailed as a genuine American hero and political maverick.

Students spent a pleasant, relaxing summer away only to be backstabbed on their return — Russell House food was changed. Gone are Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and that quality Asian restaurant that no one knew the name of. Instead, frauds filled in their places and hid their food downgrades behind the niceties of a fancier looking food hall.

“Fascism” is just one of many loaded words that seems to be thrown around too much these days. Whether or not the label can be rightly applied to anyone in the American political sphere, it is undeniable that totalitarian tendencies do rear their head in some aspects of civilian life.

Isn’t it good to be back? The summer has finally simmered down, you’ve moved into your new place, and you’re ready to tackle a new semester. But while you’re thinking about how excited you are to see your friends and maybe even hit up Five Points a few times, let’s get real for a second: do you know why you’re here? If you’re not sure, you should probably drop out.

A new semester is starting up across campus, and just like every August, a million things may look the same, but a million things are different.

With all the turmoil surrounding allegations of racism in the Trump White House, the ever-truthful Sarah Huckabee Sanders held a press conference Tuesday afternoon that seemed to set the record straight. Specifically, she addressed news of former aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman saying she recorded Trump saying the n-word.

The second Unite the Right rally, which took place in Washington, D.C. this August, was a dismal failure for far-right organizations across the country. The tiny group of two dozen marchers was vastly outnumbered by counter-protesters, to the point that some counter-protesters never even saw any white nationalists.

In the wake of the shocking death of Maryland football player Jordan McNair, South Carolina coach Will Muschamp came out strongly against the handling of the incident based on a report put out by ESPN. The report, detailing an allegedly toxic environment at Maryland and the culpability of head coach DJ Durkin in the tragic death of McNair, utilized many anonymous sources, something Muschamp took issue with.

The power is finally back on in Puerto Rico – well, sort of. 11 months after Hurricanes Irma and Maria struck the island and knocked out power to the majority of its residents and killed roughly 1,400 American citizens, power has been restored to the last customers of PREPA, Puerto Rico’s government run power company.

On Sunday and Monday, Apple, Facebook, Google, Spotify and even Pinterest made moves against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ content hosted on their platforms. Apple removed five of Jones’ six podcasts, Facebook banned four of Jones’ pages, YouTube (owned by Google) deleted Jones’ channel, Spotify removed one of his podcasts and Pinterest banned his account. Jones and his supporters, somewhat predictably, were outraged.

“Impeachment” seems to be the word of the hour, even if it only means the indictment of charges against the president and not necessarily his removal from office. Trump’s entire presidency, including the Russian interference with our elections, his incessant need to alienate our allies and his love of foreign dictators comes across like a fictional television show or dystopian novel.

With only a few weeks left of summer, students are starting to think about all the details that go into starting the semester at a large university. With that comes the daunting task of figuring out how to cobble together tuition with newly-won scholarships, loans and grants. All that to understand what comes out-of-pocket.

The Fourth of July has come and passed and children are still separated from their families. Much has been said about how the policy of tearing families apart, and detaining young children in what can only be described as cages is an affront to the ideals of our nation. The whole business is utterly cruel. While the policy itself has been suspended by the Trump administration and a deadline for the return of the children has been set by the courts, the fact that it even happened in the first place is ridiculous. Former first ladies, Holocaust survivors and international leaders have all harshly criticized the policy, and their concerns resonate with a majority of Americans.

If you've checked your student email account in the last few weeks – it’s summer break, so you probably didn’t – and happened to peek into your “Clutter” inbox, you were greeted by a little email from Student Health Services. When I first saw the email myself, I was puzzled, and the opening line seemed to echo my confusion. “What is happening?", it said in an unnecessarily bold font.
