The average yearly salary for a social worker in Columbia is $51,606 as of Jan. 2. This falls below the median salary for South Carolina graduates with four-year degrees. The role of a social worker is one who helps others with a variety of problems such as abuse, poverty, mental health issues and learning and physical disabilities, to name a few. Many of us can guess the amount of emotional toll that a job like this would take on a person.

You know, I am actually not surprised that the need to explain to college students the importance of abstaining from eating Tide laundry detergent pods has arisen. I guess some people think it is funny to eat Tide Pods. The recent spike in cases reported by the American Association of Poison Control Center certainly suggests as much.

There is a common reaction among Southerners when it comes to snow or any inclement weather. The steps usually include a premature rush to cancel school, a hustle to stock up at the grocery store and a panic about any form of driving.

One of the most unsustainable materials in the world has also become the most used material in the world: plastic. Over 300 million tons of plastic is produced each year, with a scary amount of it being single-use.

We live in a time where news goes from bad to worse in the course of mere minutes some days. Most people would be somewhat jolted, but not surprised to hear about modern-day slavery around the world. What then, do we do about the recent videos that have surfaced showing African slaves being shackled and sold in present-day Libya? The images are reminiscent of the horrific history book illustrations we’ve all seen in school of the 18th century slave trade. There are many groups to blame for this low point in Libya, as the country is largely seen as a “failed state”, ravaged by Gaddafi, civil war, ISIS and Al-Qaeda militants. The discovery of their major human trafficking is not new, but with the release of footage of slave auctions by CNN investigative journalists, it seems impossible to me that the UN can ignore these atrocious human rights violations.

As Thanksgiving approaches, I become increasingly excited for a break from school, going home to my family and a feast of home-cooked food. One thing I don’t really think about when Thanksgiving time rolls around are pilgrims, Christopher Columbus or Native Americans. What was once the “reason for the season” in relation to Thanksgiving has taken a back burner for most families — and for good reason. If you told me as a child that I would get half a week off from school to celebrate mass murder in the name of thankfulness, I would have laughed in your face.

Today is the day that many look forward to all year, a day of treats, spookiness and most of all, costumes. In a college town plagued with debt and laziness, the costumes seen can range from cat to sexy cat or nurse to sexy nurse. Honestly, who really budgets for a costume, so no judgement.

In recent social media news, a new movement has been sweeping Twitter and Facebook in the wake of the recent Harvey Weinstein scandal. Popularized by actress Alyssa Milano, the “Me Too” campaign has been sweeping feeds as women publicize their personal sexual assault stories. The “Me Too” campaign is not new and was not actually created by Milano, but by an African American woman named Tarana Burke in 2007. The campaign was started to help victims realize that they are not alone through seeing others around them posting #MeToo to show the magnitude of sexual assault.

If there is one common complaint that I’ve heard among freshmen, it is the USC meal plans. As an incoming student, you have the choice to choose how many meals you want to purchase per week, whether it be 10, 14, 21 and so on.

Surprise, surprise; last Friday, the Trump administration took another step to erase former President Obama's legacy and women's rights. In the name of religious freedom, Trump signed away women's rights to free birth control under their employer's insurance. The federal requirement enacted under the Affordable Care Act to make employers provide free birth control under their company insurance plans has been revoked in an appeal to the religious freedoms of employers. Basically, the government wants to protect the rights of employers to not feel bad about going against their religious values by going against the basic rights of women to have health care.

Many of us are aware of the giant presence that the social media platform Twitter has in the world of news and day-to-day conversation. Twitter has taken off and become the voice of the world for not only individual students like you and me, but for celebrities and politicians alike. With so many opinions flying around the site, sometimes we lose track of the facts.

Kenneth Gleason, a 23-year-old, white male, was arrested last Monday on charges of shooting and killing two unarmed African-American males. In two separate instances, Gleason fired fatal shots from his car at the men on the street, then proceeded to get out of his car, walk up to the victims and continue shooting. Gleason later opened fire on the house of an African-American family in his neighborhood. No one was injured. Upon searching his home, police found that Gleason had a copy of an Adolf Hitler speech. Gleason had no relation to any of the deceased.
