On Jan. 19, an exhibit called “Drawing for Meaning” opened up in the McMaster Gallery. Open until Feb. 9, the exhibit showcases pieces created in different mediums by SVAD faculty, featuring many different ways that drawing adds to the creative process. Curated by the Associate Professor of Studio Art, more than a dozen faculty have created and showcased their art in this exhibit.

The Second City, a Chicago based improv comedy group, performed as one of Carolina Production’s Spring 2017 events on Wednesday night. The world’s leader in improvisation, opening in 1959, The Second City is a comedy club, theater and school. The Second City has produced many famous alumni, including Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Stephen Colbert.

Carolina Productions will be hosting a Foreign Film Festival in Russell House, which will include movies produced from various countries around the world and spoken in various languages. They will be shown in Russell House Theater Nov. 14 - 18 at no charge for students.

Cockstock was Homecoming 2016’s newest addition, initially proposed by Student Body President Michael Parks, when he ran for office last year. Part of “Falling for Carolina,” the concert was held on the Strom Thurmond Field Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and featured Cockapella, The Carolina Girls and hip-hop duo Rae Sremmund.

The music faculty took a new look at chamber pieces in the “Women in Music" in the October installment the Freeman Sunday Concerts hosted by the University of South Carolina School of Music. This intimate chamber concert included contrasting pieces that could take students away from their thoughts of class and deadlines.

The Indie South Fair returned to bring a weekend of art and music to Columbia on Sept. 23 and 24. This free event has its roots in Athens, Georgia, but travels all around the Southeast, hosting artists and designers that find passion in their work. Just a seven minute drive from the Horseshoe, the Indie South Fair housed music, awesome gifts and handmade trinkets of all sorts. Booths were set up all around the venue with various items such as jewelry, clothes, soaps and candles. Some of the vendors even had handmade items from recycled materials like pendants made from driftwood or lamps made from the head of a doll, a camera or bike tires.
