London’s “The Independent” called him “the busiest man in literature” and described him as a “prolific poet, a passionate teacher and the high priest of reggae.” His highly acclaimed work has been featured in books, magazines and journals that have found their way into the hands of people around the world. An Emmy Award-winning documentarian, Kwame Dawes is a scholar activist whose work has inspired people around the world to think deeply about what it means to be a citizen in a global society.
Our university has benefited greatly from Dawes’ scholarship and his leadership. Founder and director of USC’s poetry initiative, Dawes was appointed executive director of USC’s Arts Institute in 2005 and has worked tirelessly to build partnerships that have enhanced the arts both on campus and in the local community.

As members of the Carolina Community, we have all pledged our allegiance to the Carolinian Creed and to the values it espouses. Having joined this community, we have committed ourselves to being more than excellent students. We have committed ourselves to being excellent citizens who “will discourage bigotry, while striving to learn from differences in people, ideas and opinions.” We have committed ourselves to demonstrating “concern for others, their feelings and their need for conditions which support their work and development.”

The operation of USC's $19 million biomass facility is three years behind schedule. Though Johnson Controls is responsible for getting the plant working and is required to pay USC millions as long as it's not, the fact that USC is associated with this beleaguered project, and the fact that this project is associated with Innovista, makes the university look bad.

While most of us are sleeping, they’re up dealing with a resident who has had too much to drink in Five Points or has just broken up with his or her boyfriend or girlfriend of three years. While most of us hardly have time to think about our own well-being, they’re responsible for helping ensure the safety and well-being of students who depend on them.
