President Barack Obama stated that “a gulf of
mistrust” exists between the citizens of America and their police forces at the Congressional Black Caucus
Foundation Annual Phoenix Awards dinner earlier this week. There must have
been a blue moon in the sky that evening because I agree with him
emphatically.

On Tuesday, President Obama sent another 350 troops to Iraq, bringing the total to more than 1000 US soldiers deployed in the country — but remember, it’s not an invasion. These thousand plus American soldiers will be serving in exclusively “non-combat” roles protecting the $750 million American embassy in Baghdad, though I question how much money and how many troops we have to spend on fortification before an embassy ceases to be an embassy and becomes a military base.

You’ve probably heard about Rohypnol, Xanax and GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid) if you’ve ever taken a sexual education course. These powerful sedatives are among the most well-known date rape additives, chosen by rapists for their potency in relatively small doses and for being difficult to detect once added to a drink.

If you’ve tuned into the news at all over the past several weeks you’ve already heard about the police shooting of Michael Brown, an African-American teen who many witnesses said was completely unarmed and submissive to police commands at the time.

Earlier this week, President Barack Obama released his budget for 2015. It included proposed budgets for each of the different departments he oversees (and the government on the whole), as well as projections for these budgets and expenditures over the next ten years. This budget promises to “further reduc[e] the deficit and debt,” and to promote fiscal responsibility.

When the Affordable Care Act (or ACA) was introduced in the late 2000s, many policy makers warned that the law would force health insurance companies to go out of business, increase healthcare costs for almost everyone and force millions of Americans to leave their plans. President Barack Obama and other supporters of the bill promised that these negative forecasts would never happen, but reality has shown that the Affordable Care Act is as bad, if not worse, than even the most pessimistic early projections.

For the first time in almost 10 years, Iran has showed up to the international bargaining table, willing to talk about a peaceful resolution to dissolving their nuclear program*1. It seems that our own Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is adamantly opposed to a peaceful conclusion to this longstanding tension.
