Rivalry Series hero image

Letter from 2 rival editors: The Daily Gamecock, The Tiger return for second edition of Rivalry Series

It has been nearly 130 years of this magical rivalry. The Catch. The Catch II. Taneyhill signing the Tiger Paw. The Sigma Nu prank. The Deshaun Watson ACL game. Black Magic.

The list goes on and on; so many iconic moments, players and games have come through one rivalry, duked out every season between two schools separated by just 130 miles. From The Daily Gamecock and The Tiger, we felt it was proper to make the “Rivalry Series” a tradition of our own, bringing back our collaboration from last year.

We’re not here to give you a history lesson but a celebration, because that’s what the Palmetto Bowl is. It is a celebration of the state. No matter how divided we are, no matter how loyal we are to the Gamecocks or the Tigers, we can find common ground in appreciation of good football in the state of South Carolina.

Every season, hundreds of thousands of fans line up and pack the seats of Memorial Stadium and Williams-Brice Stadium. Every season, fans hope for the best, they cheer hard, and they are proud, win or lose. Clemson and South Carolina have more common ground than many fans might care to admit, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.

In this edition of the Rivalry Series, we want to point out the differences but also celebrate the common ground. As student journalists, it is important for us to shine light on the rivalry that makes South Carolina come together.

We hope you enjoy, and we hope to see you at Williams-Brice Stadium on Nov. 29 when another chapter in this historic rivalry gets written. Go Tigers and Go Cocks.

Sincerely,

Brendan Dougherty, sports editor of The Daily Gamecock

Ethan Silipo, sports editor of The Tiger
