The year 2016 brought us a lot of pain, a lot of good memes and a few Nazis. In the first "Captain America" movie, Steve Rogers rises to fame by punching Hitler in the face. And while some brave souls are still happily punching out Nazis, last year Marvel revealed that Captain America himself is a Hydra agent. What’s amazing about this is not the political hoopla of making an American hero a fascist enemy of the state; no, what’s amazing about this is that it is somehow easier for the American public to stomach a Nazi Captain America than a gay Captain America.

This week, the confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland’s stolen Supreme Court seat have begun. Neil Gorsuch has done his best to strike the tone of a traditionalist judge — above politics, wholly objective, wholly independent — but even if we might normally buy it, many of us on the left are still (justifiably) bitter about Senate Republicans’ childish dereliction of duty in 2016.

When a University of Alabama junior saw photos of twenty-year-old Emi Miller and her African-American friend on Tinder, he sent multiple horrifyingly racist and anti-LGBTQ messages eerily similar to the rhetoric of the KKK.

This weekend a release date for the film “3 Generations,” formerly “About Ray,” was announced. It’s a film ostensibly about a trans character, which would otherwise be welcome, but it falls victim to almost every single pitfall Hollywood's attempts to represent trans people suffer from. So let’s talk about representation, why it’s needed and why the media is doing it badly.

The Daily Gamecock recently reported on a number of alarming alcohol statistics at USC. As demonstrated by this chart, USC outpaces the national average and even the SEC average in a number of alcohol-related behaviors among freshmen. Some of the more concerning statistics listed are that only 42% of USC freshmen don’t drink, 13% have been taken advantage of sexually and 11% have engaged in ‘problematic drinking’ (more than 10 drinks for men and 8 for women), the last stat being almost twice the national average.

Imagine you work at a physically demanding job where your boss tells you the following: you won’t be paid, you will make time outside of work for classes most people spend full time doing, those classes will be paid for, but you are to accept all the risk for any injury that you may receive which could result in you losing that support, doing work that gives your organization millions of dollars worth of benefit that you receive no part of, and that you should grin and be thankful that you get some education. Because even though your boss makes a seven figure salary, that doesn’t mean you’re doing any real work.

In just the month that the Trump administration has occupied power in the White House, there have been many issues that have carried over from the election period and some new conflicts that have surfaced that hinder his ability to perform well with his team. These conflicts consist of continuing anti-Trump riots, the fake news media and now the loss of trust with inter-governmental figures, especially with the resignation of former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

When I was younger, I loved to dress up my dolls. I got hours of entertainment from simply changing their outfits over and over again. I also had a pet dog as a kid. The thought of dressing up my dog, however, never crossed my mind. In fact, when I saw people with dogs dressed in sparkly tops or shiny boots, I was always confused. Why did people see the need to put clothes on their animals?

Last Wednesday, I went with the Leadership and Service Center on an Impact Weekly trip to the Tucker Center. This facility specializes in the care of disabled veterans, many of whom are elderly. This experience educated me on a topic I thought was already overexposed and talked to death: the care of veterans by the government.

In case you haven’t noticed, South Carolina is having an unusually warm winter. It’s commonplace to see people walking around in shorts. Even when it gets cold, some students still persist in wearing shorts, even if they layer up on their upper half.

Dogs are commonly known as man’s best friend. As the chosen furry companion for 44 percent of Americans, dogs are often viewed as a friend, protector and family member rolled into one. However, dogs’ basic needs are being overlooked more and more.

Milo Yiannopoulos is one of those people I generally prefer to ignore. Unfortunately, recent events have made this all but impossible for me and anyone else who still manages to stomach reading the news.

Gamecock Nation was spoiled for those final three years under Ray Tanner, as the South Carolina baseball team reached three straight College World Series finals, winning two back-to-back while creating a national powerhouse. The Gamecocks would host a Super Regional in three of the next four seasons, including last year, only missing out in the disappointment of 2015.

“Drain the Swamp.” It is a familiar catchphrase used by Donald Trump’s election campaign to establish the candidate’s anti-corruption, and therefore anti-establishment, position. Running against a figure like Hillary Clinton, the idea of fixing Washington’s ethical problems likely won him the election. However, Trump’s controversial relationship with Russia undermines this position, which includes allegations of DNC hacks, and other election-tampering behaviors.

This Valentine’s Day, it’s fitting that we consider the things we associate with romance. Behind the dim restaurants, low voices, glasses of wine, inviting smiles or whatever other mental furniture you conjure up lie the ideas of commitment and emotional security. You may instinctively disagree, but consider that only 9 percent of millennials say that they never want to be married, which, though a higher percentage than older generations, is still less than one in 10. Most of us have an innate desire for this kind of lifelong connection with another person, in which we can be vulnerable about ourselves and still be accepted.

Valentine’s Day is famous for two things: celebrating romance and making single people feel terrible about themselves. Though most people recognize at this point that Valentine’s Day is a more or less made-up holiday, used to celebrate love and spend lots of money, it still has a lot of power for those soft-hearted romantics out there. The only thing that makes Valentine’s Day more notable, it seems, than a candle-lit dinner is spending it alone.

The world is an incredibly unjust place. We so often hear of instances where people are wrongfully accused of crimes they did not commit or of penalties and prison sentences that do not fit the offenses.
