Candidate may file police report
Student body presidential candidate James Strickland’s campaign banner was stolen from Greene Street sometime between Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon.
“We had a replacement, thank goodness, and that is currently hanging,” Strickland said. “I’m somewhat surprised and disappointed.”
Strickland said his campaign was working on filing a police report. He informed the Elections Commission of the theft, and the value of the banner won’t be counted toward his campaign’s spending total. Candidates are only allowed to spend $1,000 each year.
“I have absolutely no idea why anyone would want to do this, and I have no suspects,” Strickland said. “I don’t think that it will have a significant effect on our campaign. We’re just going to keep on rolling with the punches.”
Theft and defacement of campaign banners have long been a mainstay of Student Government elections.
Student body president Patrick Olson’s banner was stolen last year. Two years ago, “weiner” was plastered across Alex Stroman’s forehead by an unknown vandal.
