The Mix Tape: Five Summer Internships We're Obsessing About This Week

Adesso Condominium — Sales and Marketing

Adesso Condominium, across the street from the Honors Residence on the west side of campus, is offering an internship for students interested in sales and marketing for the summer. The job includes up to 24 hours per week greeting prospective clients, updating records of clients and possible clients and managing media relations for the company. College students of any age can apply, and requirements include a high school diploma, computer literacy (including experience with Microsoft programs) and communication and customer service skills. The internship will surely be an interesting source of great experience for your remaining college career (no matter what your major is), and with Moe's and Firehouse Subs right next door, even lunch breaks are guaranteed to be enjoyable. For more information and to submit a resume, email Beth Watson at beth.h@sc.edu.

Human Rights Campaign

Human Rights Campaign is the country's largest nonprofit LGBT rights group, garnering more than 750,000 members in its fight for equal rights. Based out of Washington, D.C., HRC offers a whole list of summer internships for students in all different fields, ranging from communications and marketing to graphic design to "Jewish workplace equality." All internships are unpaid, but class credit is available upon request. There are different responsibilities for interns, tailored to the particular program, but each works towards the same cause of equal rights for all. All internships are based in Washington, and although housing is not paid for, staff members will help interns find local housing. Interns are also encouraged to apply for full-time positions as paid staff members upon completing a summer internship. You can apply for any of HRC's 24 internship programs at hrc.org.

Music Saves Lives

Music Saves Lives is a nonprofit organization that organizes blood drives across the country in conjunction with music tours, festivals and shows. Founded by Russel Hornbeek in Southern California, Music Saves Lives aims to link a love for music, entertainment and charity, encouraging youth and young adults to get involved in their communities and donate by giving blood. The nonprofit has been recognized by the American Red Cross for their success in involving student-aged music lovers in blood donation, hosting the most successful summer drives for the age group. Music Saves Lives, although not a traditional internship position, offers many ways for students to serve during the summer outside of giving blood. Anyone is welcome to apply to organize a blood drive in their area, with Warped Tour being one of the most notable places Music Saves Lives makes an appearance. Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company — Information Technology

For students with in-depth experience working with computers, including in HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery, the Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company is hiring for a paid summer internship as a site builder and web developer for the company. Interns will work about 480 hours over the summer at $8 an hour, and must be able to multitask and work well in a team. The internship starts June 6 and ends Aug. 26, so if you're staying in Columbia this summer, what better way to make almost $4,000 in just three months? Resumes and questions should be sent to Beth Watson at beth.h@sc.edu.

The Student Conservation Association

The Student Conservation Association, based out of New Hampshire, is a nonprofit that works to build environmental advocacy and includes students concerned with the conservation of national parks and lands.
Internships are offered in all 50 states, at different parks and in different areas, including invasive plant control, sustainability and wildlife. SCA does include a stipend with their internships, which are anywhere between 3 and 12 months, as well as housing and round-trip travel.
With the opportunity to intern anywhere across the country, the SCA gives students invaluable and unique experience in some of the most specialized environmental outlets. For more information visit thesca.org.
