In Our Opinion: Blood drive shows best side of rivalry

Monday kicked off the annual Carolina–Clemson Blood Drive, pitting ourselves against our archrival in the name of philanthropy.

The wide majority of us are totally powerless to defeat Clemson on the football field; but in this important cause, we can defeat the Upstate school and help those who desperately need it.

With the help of the American Red Cross, the two main state colleges encourage the student body to donate blood and help those in need, as well as beat their cross-state foes.

This annual tradition is one of the more positive side effects that has come from the storied rivalry.

Using university tradition in a philanthropic, helpful manner is always something to take pride in.

Giving blood is something almost everyone can partake in and benefits those of tragedy, giving those who need it a pint of blood that can save his or her life.

As we approach the season of giving, we’re consistently reminding that no matter how many tests we may have, group projects with deadlines looming or lack of parking spots when you need one most, there’s always — without a doubt — someone who is having a worse day than we are.

The Red Cross finds these people and provides relief to them in the form of emergency aid and, specifically, blood to the injured and suffering.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t express 100 percent support for the program.

So as you are planning your schedule for the coming days, be sure to set aside half an hour or so — it doesn’t take long — to give to the cause and help Carolina prevail over Clemson yet again, as a precursor to the Battle of the Palmetto State less than two weeks away.
