Intramural referee earns honors

All-American status given to USC official

Corey Stevens, a fourth-year sport and entertainment management student, was named an All-American Official at the 2012 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association's Campus Championship Series in basketball at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Stevens was one of just 15 officials to earn All-American status. He was named an All-Tournament Official at the regional tournament earlier in the year, which made him eligible to become an All-American.

Stevens has had experience officiating on a national stage. During the school year, he was chosen as an official for the American Collegiate Intramural Sports Flag Football National Championships. He was one of just 44 officials across the country to receive the honor. He is also just the second USC intramural employee to reach the national level in both flag football and basketball.
Before traveling to the championships, which were held at the University of West Florida, Stevens was named an All-Tournament Official at the regional tournament.

Stevens, who was the only official from the state selected for the national championships, said the lessons learned at the tournament will be help him in future intramural contests at USC.

"It was a great opportunity to experience games at such an advanced level and ref with other high-quality officials," Stevens said. "I am able to take the information and experience back to campus to help our officials."

Along with being an intramural referee, Stevens has served as the student sport coordinator for flag football and basketball, the highest position a student can reach in the intramural department at USC.
