Democratic convention starts strong

Powerful speeches headline first night Read More

As much as the Republicans have been shredding the Democratic National Convention, the Democrats showed their grit Tuesday with a powerful and emotionally-driven presentation. The ceremony didn't disappoint and showed that the Democrats are behind their leader 100 percent.

Featuring a pre-recorded speech from the late "liberal lion" Ted Kennedy (delivered by his nephew Joe Kennedy), and a fiery speech from Ted Strickland announcing that he was back and better than ever, the night culminated with a touching speech from first lady Michelle Obama who, when attacked with questions about her husband and whether his position as president has changed him, answered that he's "still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago."

The night kicked off with the usual keynote speech, but this year, Julian Castro — the mayor of San Antonio — became the first Latino given the honor. He is being touted as the next rising star in the Democratic Party. In 2004, another man was given the honor to make the speech, catapulting himself into super-stardom, and that man stands as the leader of our nation today, President Barack Obama.

Last night featured more of the same, with speeches from former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and former president Bill Clinton. The Democratic National Convention will continue tonight, as President Obama gives a speech that he hopes will revive his campaign and become the launching pad for his second term.
