Nickelodeon embraces ‘end of world’

Theater bases latest series on Mayan prediction

It’s 2012, which means that it may be the end of the world as we know it.

Sure, there are people who believe that the Mayan calendar ending in 2012 doesn’t mean the end of the world, but it’s still an excuse for believers to “celebrate” their “final days on this Earth.” And Nickelodeon Theatre is looking to help in the celebration.

Named after the R.E.M. song “It’s the End of the World As We Know It,” the Nickelodeon’s late-night movie event “And I Feel Fine” will help countdown the days until the Mayan calendar cycle restarts and what people are saying is the end of the world occurs.

“It’s fun because we haven’t had a late-night series here consistently,” said Isaac Calvage, director of marketing at the Nickelodeon.

“We wanted to take a loose approach to the end of the world with a series of late-night films.”

Starting tonight and continuing through three consecutive Fridays, the Nickelodeon will screen a series of “end of the world” related films, beginning with “Ghostbusters” tonight, “War Games” on Dec. 7, “Outbreak” on Dec. 14 and “Shaun of the Dead” on Dec. 21.

“We tried to pick films that people would enjoy or films like Outbreak, which really isn’t played for laughs but still a great movie,” Calvage said.

Calvage not only sees the movie series as a thematic event, but also as a opportunity for movie lovers to gather and share their passion for film.

“There are not a lot of opportunities for movie geeks to just get together and celebrate a film,” Calvage said.

The day the Mayan calendar resets, Dec. 21, is also the final day of the event. After a screening of “Shaun of the Dead,” the Nickelodeon will host their own apocalypse party at The Whig on Gervais Street. It will be open to the public with a drink special that relates to the end of the world.

“With the party happening at the end of ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ I’m guessing that the drink could be a red color,” Calvage said.
