Increased weapons control not solution to Chiefs player incident
Jovan Belcher owned a gun. Actually, he owned more than one. That seems to be the only relevant fact to liberals pertaining to the unfortunate murder-suicide of the Kansas City Chiefs player and his girlfriend Saturday.
The anti-gun zealots such as NBC sports anchor Bob Costas and Kansas City sports writer Jason Whitlock blame gun control. Costas shared an article Whitlock wrote with millions during the “Sunday Night Football” game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys: “If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kassandra Perkins would both be alive today.”
A football game is not the place for lobbying personal opinions, not to mention the series of fallacies within the statement. First, there is no way for Costas to claim that without a gun (which Belcher legally owned), he wouldn’t have found another means to commit this heinous crime. Second, if he believes it’s the gun that killed them, he should consider that the Second Amendment gives the right to possess firearms. Third, it is reported that alcohol, painkillers and domestic problems may have all contributed to Belcher’s actions.
So I ask the questions: Why are guns always the problem and stricter gun control the sole solution? This was the murder of a young woman followed by a suicide of a deeply disturbed individual who suffered from a multitude of mental issues. Why aren’t we focusing instead on the lack of counseling for suicidal or mentally disturbed individuals? Or addressing the further potential mental injuries football players may have?
Did Belcher use a gun in the end? Yes, but that factor shouldn’t be the only one considered in this case.
