USC desegregation anniversary event calendar

The 2013-2014 academic year will be dedicated to celebrating the anniversary of USC’s desegregation, with academic and cultural events from September until April.

Sept. 11
_“Retracing the Steps”
10 a.m., Osborne Administration Building_
Henrie Monteith Treadwell and James Solomon, Jr. will retrace the steps they took into and out of Osborne to register as two of USC’s first three African-American students, officially desegregating the university. They will speak along with university President Harris Pastides. Plans for a desegregation commemorative garden will also be unveiled in the courtyard next to Osborne.

Sept. 11
_Ambassador Andrew Young
7:30 p.m., Koger Center_
Former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young, a contemporary of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a civil rights leader, will speak at an event honoring Monteith Treadwell, James Solomon, Jr. and the late Robert Anderson, the third student who desegregated USC.

_“Turning a Crisis into an Opportunity: The Integration of Higher Education in South Carolina”
Hollings Library_
This exhibit examines the desegregation of South Carolina’s colleges and universities. It was created by USC Libraries’ South Carolina Political Collections.

Sept. 12 — Dec. 20
_“1801 – 1963: The Long Road to Desegregation at the University of South Carolina”
South Caroliniana Library_
This exhibit takes a look at the roles of African-Americans at USC, from the university’s founding to its desegregation.

Sept. 15 — April 30
_“1963 – 2013: Desegregation — Integration”
Museum of Education, Wardlaw Hall_
This exhibit portrays the racial climate of Columbia in 1963 and offers advice to pre-service teachers who plan to work in South Carolina and be engaged in social justice and civil rights efforts.

Sept. 26
_Nikky Finney
7 p.m., Law School Auditorium_
Award-winning poet and visiting professor Nikky Finney will deliver the Adrenee Glover Freeman Lecture in African-American Women’s Studies.
