ONLINE EXCLUSIVE Column: Everyone advertises, knowingly or not

Brand recognition is nothing new to our generation.

Starbucks is most likely the only thing that comes to mind when someone mentions getting coffee. When people discuss phones, it’s either an Apple or an Android.

Every day we are walking around like miniature billboards for these companies and brands. Advertising is a complicated business, yet we participate in it every day without even knowing.

It’s easy to talk about things that you hate or love, and that can influence someone else’s decision.

Some reality shows will blur out the name or logo of an object. A person can be talking on the phone even with the logo blocked out, but we still know what it is — we recognize the style or setup of the phone.

Celebrities don't even have to sign a contract endorsing the product; they’re doing it naturally. It’s definitely illegal to not blur out the product, but that doesn’t stop us from realizing what they’re using. It may not be an outspoken “Hey, buy this product because I use it and I’m famous,” kind of message, but we as consumers still get a certain feedback.

Humans like to feel closely related to other humans, so if you see Kim Kardashian drinking Vitamin Water and if you like Kim Kardashian, you may start drinking Vitamin Water as well.

Celebrities aren’t the only ones who advertise. The very first place we gain opinions from is home. If your parent or guardian uses a certain brand you’re probably going to use it.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s simply how the world works.

When we like something we talk about it. When we hate something we definitely talk about it. It’s easier to explain why we dislike something than it is to explain why we like it.

People pick up on what we’re saying and we don’t even realize it. Sometimes we don’t even realize that we’re being influenced by something. It’s just human nature to pick up on certain things. No one wants to be the only person not using something. That’s why big brands are so popular; people start loving them, and no one wants to be left out of the loop.

Everyone is their own little advertisement. We show off what brands we like to wear, restaurants we like to eat at and how we use technology. Every day our own actions might influence what someone else buys, and we aren’t even aware of it.
