New homecoming events, celebrations announced

USC's Homecoming Executive Commission announced a full list of events and activities to be held on campus during Homecoming week of the 2016 fall semester.

In addition to traditional Homecoming events, the commission has added some new events to the week's lineup in its efforts to ensure that all members of the Carolina community can celebrate and participate. The commission states that its vision is to “promote an environment that caters to the diversity of the Carolina family with the engagement of students, alumni and the surrounding community in an inclusive, positive and fun week of events.”

The week of events will begin October 30 with "For the Kids" Play Day, which is an event with games and dancing to raise funds for local charities. That evening, a Halloween celebration with music, movies and other activities will be open to any and all students.

October 31 will be the first-ever "USC's Choice" day of Homecoming festivities. The commission will put out a Twitter poll prior so that students can decide what they would like to do.

USC will uphold the tradition of the "Carolina Crowning" on November 1. After applying and going through interviews, students will be able to participate in this event which will recognize them for their leadership and talents as demonstrated at the university.

Another new event will be the highlight of November 2. Right in the middle of Homecoming week will be "Cockchella," a music "mini-festival" a-la Coachella in California, and it will feature students who audition and are selected to perform. Trivia Night will also be hosted on that Wednesday by the ThinkFast Trivia Company. Students will be able to participate in a game night full of trivia over many topics including USC.

The USC Penny Wars, also a brand-new festivity, will be on November 3. Individual students and student organizations will be able to compete to raise donations for Harvest Hope. The last new event of Homecoming week will be the USC Rave. Thursday will end with a night of music, dancing and giveaways.

Wrapping up Homecoming week on November 4 will be the annual Homecoming parade. Students, faculty, staff and anyone in the surrounding community can come out to see USC's marching band, esteemed alumni and festive floats built by USC's own student organizations.
